organizers are call tag one of the biggest and best in Haltoa Hills history Protect Our Water and En vironmental Resources was given access to the Town of Halton Hills public works garage where they held a giant garage sale that raised over cepted until the end of May said POWER public realtions spokesman John Minns The extension has been given by the Environmental Assessment Branch of the Ministry of the En vironment comments by the end of May The responses will come back and they will be rewritten and recirculated by the ministry he said The only thing that could stop the process is if the proponent RSI backed out And Mrs French said it is unlikely RSI who has invested money into promoting the Acton quarry as a landfill site will back out now POWER will hold a twoday workshop in June during Environ ment Week to host all over the Niagara Escarpment And Mrs French says the group has already started plans for booths at both the Acton and Georgetown fairs The fairs are held annually in the fall But Mrs French said the allday garage sale Saturday demonstrated public support for POWERS attempts to fight the proposed dump in Acton The throngs of people who came out to the garage sale were just overwhelming One account puts the total attendence in the thousands Mrs French said the group was excited by the turnout the towns generosity in lending the public works site and the- local donations received But she added it was also great to see POWER on the oclock news Saturday after the event was attended toy Channel and Channel news POWER members raised to help in the in to the Ministry of the Environ ment last February to receive government approval to turn the Third 22 quarry into adumpsite An organizer of Saturdays garage sale and president of the POWER group Ruth French was proud of the groups f achievements We virtually took a mountain of what might have been garbage and recycled it into for our cause Local residents bought and con tributed assorted items to help POWER raise money to fight RSI Any leftover items were given to local chanties said Mrs French RSI is in the first stages of seek ing governmental approval for a landfill site in the Acton quarry The Ministry of the Environment has sent out documents inviting public comment Groups such as the Niagara Escarpment Commis sion and the Town of Hills have already responded but the ministry granted an extension to those who are late with comments Originally given an April 15 deadline comments will be POWER has applied to the pro vincial government for funding funding that will allow the citizens group to fight RSIs Ac ton quarry proposal consolidated hearings The hearings could begin as early as February said Mrs French The hearings could cost POWER up to Mrs French said
