severances in the Region and are now raking a Milton fanner over the coals before granting a land severance With three people charged with land severance offences in the last month two Milton residents and one landowner coun cillors advised former cattle fanner Gino DaRe and his wife to sign an swearing the severed land will be for a proposed fanning operation The DaRes are former cattle farmers with acres of land in North Halton For the last several years they have been cash crop farmers following financial com mitments in 1983 and a fire in 1986 Mr DaRe said there are 35 head of cattle in Stayner now waiting to come home He proposed to start up his farming operation again with his wife Wanda and to divide his land to allow their son John to assist them on the farm John is married with children and presently lives with his parents said Mr In an emotional plea to coun cillors Mr readily agreed to the Regions condition on his land severance approval Im swearing to you and Im willing to put it into a statement he said This land severance is not a way of capitalizing on this lot farming is a way of life for my family J Speaking on behalf of the DaRes Fred Cunningham said the family is supported by many prominent farmers in the Region who would like to see the cattle farm back in operation But as it stands the ap plication does not comply with the Regional plan and part of the land is located in an environmentally- sensitive area protected by the Niagara Escarpment Plan Regional staff say these factors could be overlooked if Mr DaRe were a bona fide farmer But Mr DaRe with an occupa tion outside farming does not fit this desenption The DaRes say they need the land severance before they can resume cattle far ming If we could build a barn and a house at the same time everything would be ready to go into operation at once with John there to assist said Fred Cunningham a spokesman for the family Im in support of this applica tion quite frankly Chairman Peter told Regional coun cillors last week But he added that land severance is an issue that has a lot of sensitivity attached to it We are in a situation where there are suggestions of land division abuse he said this is on our minds The Oakville landowner charged by Halton Regional Police last week allegedly sold his severed lot intended for his son to a develop ing firm for over Regional staff said an affidavit cannot be used to force landowners to use the land for intended pur- Salesmen may be bogus police warn The Halton Regional police are warning the Regions business community to be wary of telephone canvassers attempting to sell advertising space for police department and associa tion publications Detective Robertson of 11 Divi sion in Georgetown said although some of these people may be legitimate it is unusual for the police to do business in this way He explained that advertising for the Halton Regional Police departments publication The In former is sold on the basis of a personal meeting between the departments advertising people and the potential client In this way businesses can ensure the legitimacy of what it is they are purchasing According to Detective Robert son these impersonators claim they represent a police publica tion because people automatical ly think police departments are legitimate organizations Businesses are advised to ob- tain a telephone number or some other means of contact before becoming involved in an transaction These conartists typically will give out a post office box number where payment for the ad should be mailed
