the chance to explore career interests and aptitudes related to their high school courses through cooperative education Objectives of coop is Jo apply practise and extend skills learned in the classroom in a real work set ting and to experience the expecta tions of the working world Before being accepted into program the students must firfr go through a screening process given by the school and then an in terview given by the potential employer the first two weeks of the semester the inschool classes get the student ready for their place ment They learn how to write a proper resume and thankyou let ter which are then in turn sent to the employer after their interview The students learn how to fill out a job application properly and watch many movies which give helpful hints about job safety and proper employee behavior The students receive log sheets which are very important for keep ing track of what they have done and how many hours they have worked The students must work a minimum of hours in order to receive their two credits offered for the coop Depending on your placement it is possible to take a fullday coop or even a oneperiod coop Two people are in charge of the student First there is the teacher monitor who marks the students work and goes every two weeks to visit the student at their work site making sure everything is going well The employer is expected provide the student with op portunities to develop the specific work skills the student is in terested in developing Employers and the school will expect the student to be present every day In the extreme cir cumstances when sickness occurs both the employer and the teacher monitor must be telephoned so they know that the student will not be there It is possible for the student to be fired from their placement if a situation is extreme However before this step is taken the teacher monitor would work with the student and the employer to try to solve any problems If there is no other choice it be possible to find the student another place ment or their coop may be ter minated In either case courses such as these have virtually no pro blems which cant be solved and there are hardly any dropouts Coop is continued in Grade 13 and community colleges Students seeking a career which depends upon a university education may wish to investigate this career field through coop participation before making expensive educational commitment There are no- promises that a stu dent wilt be paid on his or her co op but some companies will pay for hours worked Other pay varia tions are possible for example the placement may pay after 320 pm or there may be employee discounts lunch money or a part- time job offer The Chamber of Commerce of the Halton area feels strongly that assisting young
