opening day took place last Saturday in fairly good weather after several days of wet which certainly helped the state of the grass if nothing else Matters went relatively smoothly apart from a couple of in juries Andrea suffered a broken arm and Paul Smith was knocked out cold from a tackleclash Both were taken to hospital and Smith was retained overnight for observation and he was still their Sunday night in good spirits There was some good and ex citing soccer played for the time of the season and I understand an excellent barbecue run by Joey Clare and Stu Baines to help the boys funds Next locally is the senior Inter County league which begins Wednesday May 17 with a change to the schedule The Meadowglen f is not quite ready and Meteor and Mariner will play at 7 m at Alcott to be followed by United ver sus Ajax Two entertaining games to lead off the first and second divi sion respectfully The league has a meeting in Milton on Thursday Wednesday May 24 has Villa vs Travel Eagles vs Meteor United vs Svlle A Stingers all early kick offs and Manners vs Crown at Cedarvale and Ajax vs Milton at Alcott both late starts As usual referees are a pro blem rather the shortage of referees is a huge problem There can be satisfaction from officiating at games and also some moments of dissatisfaction Knowledge of the game and therules is a definite advantage The Town club has sponsored budding referees for a number of years and whereas we manage to obtain several en thusiastic younger tryouts they do not always last the pace mainly abuse from the touchlines The club and the referee group have at tempted to stamp out the abuse by education and occasional suspen sion of coach manager or parent from time to time By and large we are not too bad Just one yell at an inexperienced official may be the one that drives that person in the middle away forever APPLE WINDSHIELD REPAIRS Wa Handle All Claims UnH QawVttMm Custom Rod A Baal Rapalra Parts Salas Satiric I nor mally pen The recent disaster has prompted comment The Pool have returned to the competitive fray and do not seem to have lost any edge in their play Results show that they have an opportunity of winning both league and cup this year after last Saturdays results which would make it almost a fairy story Soccer fans in UK have now begun to remingle at games and have taken it upon themselves to almost end the fans segregation After the storm come the flowers The socalled swarming hap penings in Toronto are I hope not a foreboding of things to come This is how much of the troubles began in UK years ago Reports out of New York appear to show pride in that metropolis violent ones That city also has the reputation of having crowd pro blems at sporting events hockey and baseball on occasions I recall writing several years ago that we should not turn a blind eye and think it cannot happen in Canada I also recall a soccer fan stealing a policemans gun from his holster and shooting at the referee in Windsor Referee and player assaults are severely dealt with within soccers discipline codes and long may this continue European other than UK are now involved in policefans clashes with a load of violence Hopefully the lessons are learned before they happen here in Canada If you are able to assist even In a small way with officiating please contact a club official and offer you
