asking shoppers to butt out Teresa McKee speaking as a delegation at the general commit tee meeting held in the town coun cil chambers said her two children who are asthmatics must breathe in other peoples smoke Its a right for smokers to smoke but it is a right for a non- smoker to go someplace without having to ask somebody to butt out said Ms McKee She said that grocery stores variety stores bowling alleys and hairdressing salons should provide smokefree areas for store patrons Georgetown Coun Ser- agreed that grocery stores shouldnt allow smoking She said smoking in the stores is just like someone coughing on your food Town staff said Halton Hills has no power to impose a townwide nonsmoking bylaw especially on private property without getting provincial government permis sion t But said Ms Toronto has the bylaw Brampton has the bylaw I feel Halton Hills and Milton should have the smoking bylaw too It hit home when the doctor gave me a choice either quit smoking or kill my daughter she said Ms McKees children are ag ed three and seven The boy is older and has better control of his breathing she said But for her daughter she told a crowd at the town hall chambers its like somebody takes their hand and squeezes it and they can no longer breathe when someone is smoking I get really really upset when you ask kindly for somebody to put a cigarette out and they wont Ms McKee presented coun cillors with respiratmg devices she must use for her children She said when her daughter has an asthmatic attack she must use steroid drugs And when she gets really bad she has to go on a machine she said Councillors heard Ms McKee describe one woman who refused to put her cigarette out when ask ed Ms said she informed the woman that her young daughter was asthmatic and couldnt stand the smoke The woman told her to leave the child at home said Ms She said dont see any signs I don have to put it out Ms said she was not at Mondays meeting to speak for herself but to protect her children and other asthmatics Shes only three years old She cant speak for herself she said Town councillors said they would review Ms McKees suggestion for no smoking signs in local retail stores when they review an ex isting smoking policy bylaw June Halton Police called to study deteriorating regional roads Region has asked a Regional Police officer to join the newlyformed road review committee to study speed limits on rural roads Ken Bonham from the Regional traffic unit of the Halton Regional Police will join four coun cillors including Halton Hills Coun Marilyn Serjeantson and Milton Bill Johnson to form a committee to review the Regions roads Regional council was acting on a report published by commissioner Bob Moore at the request of Coun Fred Oliver We allow twolane roads that are deteriorating to service grow ing residential areas said Burl ington Coun Barry who will also be on the road review commit tee He said Walkers Line is win dier and twistier with more bends and turns and dips and dives in it than many roads youd find in rural Ontario but it still has an So speed limit Police Staff Roy Smith said recently that North Halton has had more serious colli sions this year than the south part of the Region He blamed less lighting and higher speed limits for the figures Of the eight fatal accidents in the Region so far this year six took place in North Halton Regional councillors asked plan ning commissioner Bob Moore to take immediate action by con tacting the area municipalities to conduct joint studies with the Region Halton Region could spend as much as 28 million to fix steep slopes on Mountainview Road South in Georgetown before the road is expanded to four lanes A Regional report released last week by public works commis sioner Bob Moore said the grades on Road between Sideroad 10 and Summit Lane could be reduced from a 13per cent grade to somewhere between one and eight per cent Costs to reduce the slope could range from 7 million to million depending on the length of She structure being considered the report says But a six to grade is being recommended by con sulting firm CC Parker Con sultants Ltd hired by the Region to study the road Speaking at a Regional public works meeting last week C C Parker representative Dave said one of the problems reported by local residents at a public meeting held last September was noise from the roadway The six to grade would be a perceivable but not significant noise increase said Mr McCann The sound would in crease by three decibels welt within a noticeable decibel level of five db he said Other concerns discussed by residents at last falls meeting in cluded conservation of the forested area and of Silver Creek as well as a need for a bicycle path and pedestrian walkway CC Parker said the Region included these fac tors in a preliminary plan A second meeting will be held by the Region May pm at the Halton Hills municipal offices The consultants road study of Mountainview Road was prompted by two reports conducted in the last four years In the town completed its Town of Halton Hills Transportation Study Two years later the Halton Hills Village Traf fic Study was done Both reports said Mountainview Road South a Regional road should be graded for incr ased safety and should be expanded to four lanes to meet future requirements Georgetown South A flashing light was
