there really a second leak Your Business Diane Matey Thornton Sarvtcv The media have a way of confus things but it is beginning to look like there was no second budget leak Why anyone thought there was is a mystery Prom the time we learned that budget summary ended up m the hands of a salesman for Mutual Life Insurance Co we have been left with the impression that there was more than one source We might just as easily have ed that one person in the govern printing off note copies of the budget suit an and passed tbemaroundDJtti lends Late last week Scutram News Service reported that a after the original budget the raided the home a government print shop worker The tip came from one of the man s friends Bob McFarlane who works for Mutual In an affidavit RCMP Sgt Ovila Robichaud says he believes the budget summaries came from the printing plant To date two illicit copies of the document have been recovered one from Global reporter Doug Small and one from Mr Bob McFarlane In other words both socalled leaks may have come from the government printing plant WILSON A VICTIM Despite the evidence that the documents were stolen the Op position keeps calling for Finance Minister Michael Wilson to resign This time a number of political journalists and editorial writers have joined in the chorus What has changed Even more than before it looks like Mr Wilson has been the victim of theft an act over which he had no con trol True Mr Wilsoq appeared tonguetied in the House of Com mons the other day The is that he should have told the House about the HYUNDAI OWNERS For Service Call 8731818 leak the day he tabled the budget But there was no second leak In Mr Wilson s mind so meone had stolen budget documents and the were on his trail Talking about it would not have helped The issue we tend to forget was that the contents of the budget be disclosed as quickly as possible Mr Wilson did just that The ques tion of ministerial was and is secondary Did Mr Wilson fall short in his responsibility to the Canadian peo ple Not at all Should he have told us that Mutual Life had the budget summary too Perhaps NO DIFFERENCE In the larger scheme of things this information would not have made a great deal of difference to you or me But Liberal Leader John Turner and Democratic Party Leader Ed Broadbent would have been delighted Mr Wilson or perhaps Prime Minister Brian Mulroney did not want to give the Opposition more ammunition with which to blast the government They may have beer wrong but that does not mean the finance minister should resign No matter what the critics say Mr Wilson should not resign his post STORE HOURS 30 a 6 except Thursday Friday 30 a City Styas Ctos To Hornet Street Georgetown CENTRE GO Transit train service Georgetown has grown almost
