Page Saturday June PARKS DEPARTMENT Leisure Lines Special programs highlight summer rec The Halton Hills Recreation and Parks Department offers a wide variety of summer youth programs Following is an in traduction to two of the special programs For the first time ever the Halton Hills Recreation and Parks Department is offering a Senior Theatre Camp for people between the ages of 12 and 15 The camp runs from Aug from 9 am dally and is located at the John Elliott Theatre Georgetown The participants will write their own play and per form it at the John Elliott Theatre In addition special resource people will be running workshops during the camp ses sion Dale Hamilton a professional playwright will be starting off the program with a workshop on script writing which will give the participants ideas which they will use when writing their own play Cesser of Compact Theatre will be running a ses sion on mime which promises to be very interesting For lovers of Latin and Freestyle dancing like in the movie Dirty Dancing Bland a professional dancer will be organizing a dance lesson and helping to choreograph dances for the per formance Austin who is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario with her A in Journalism and from York University with her M FA in Theatre will be running a session on characterization and character development Ms Austin has been a teacher with the Childrens Theatre in Toron to As well she has tutored and performed with many other com and groups These profes are just the beginning of the list of resource people Moreover the leaders of Senior Theatre Camp are very well qualified and have a great deal to offer Mark Duke has been the leader of Junior Theatre Camp for several years and has had much success in that endeavor Mark is also a member of the drama group Theatre Factory and his enthusiasm and knowledge will be a real asset to the Camp Kevin Kuiak is our second leader and he comes well qualified as well Kevin has been a member of drama clubs and has won awards for his ding contribution to drama and for his excellence in stage managing at the Sears Drama Festival Mr is a student at the University of Guelph and his expertise and fresh ideas will be welcome at Senior Theatre Camp For younger drama buffs the Halton Hills Recreation and Parks Department is offering a Make A Movie Camp This pro gram Is for children between the ages of seven 13 and is located at Robert Little Public School Ac ton Extended hours are available at this camp which runs from July 24 Aug Like Senior Theatre Camp the participants wilt be writing their own script with the help of Dale Hamilton professional playwright However unlike Theatre Camp the masterpiece will be filmed at the Cable Four Studio and shown on TV at different times throughout the summer Many of the excellent resource people who are sharing their ex pertise with the Senior Theatre Camp group will be doing so at Make A Movie as well Dale Hamilton as mentioned above Gesser Mauralea Austin and also Daryl is a student of the Film and Televi Program at Mohawk Col lege and is presently employed at the SkyDome as an of the television screen at that facility He will be running a ses sion on film and television techni The leaders of Make A Movie are very well qualified Rosemary Davison has been a leader for Make A Movie Camp before as Well for Junior Theatre Camp Rosemary is a student at McMaster University and is also very skilled in music Her ex and enthusiasm will be an asset to the Make A Movie Program Rebecca Moore is a new member of our leader team Rebecca participates in a number of extra curneular ac such as school musicals vocal groups stu dent council and she enjoys various sports Her energy and drama experience will certainly benefit our Department that your child has an opportunity for an en joyable and stimulating summer experience All of our programs allow for social interaction a learning environment for new games crafts and special events Most importantly we share your concern for your child safety We want your sum to be worry free so all of our staff must attend a week of exteti sive training Most of our staff have already completed our Department s Leadership Tram Program and all have ex perience in working with children before they are even considered for employment with us Their week of training consists of lee tures and hands on sessions in program planning understan ding child behavior and develop ment problem solving working with special needs children and leading practical activities of games crafts singsongs and drama All of our summer care staff are required to have an emergency first aid certificate All of our programs have a minimum of two leaders per site and our maximum ratio of par ticipants to staff does not exceed onetofive for Tot Lots or to10 for all other programs Leaders in Training are also pre sent to further reduce these ratios by providing assistance Our Department has to accommodate both working and working families with our provisions of extended hours for child care supervised lunch hours day and half day passes family discounts as well as sum mer long discounts All of our programs are subsidized by your tax dollar so that you can afford to give your child a memorable summer Working parents may claim program fees as a tax deduction for child care ex Mayors
