Georgetown OPP officer now heads special branch Georgetown resident Ron Piers has been promoted to chief superintendent of the Ontario Pro vincial Polices special investiga tion branch Mr Piers who moves up from the position of superintendent headed the high profile Helmuth Buxbaum investigation Mr Bux- baura was found guilty of first- degree murder for arranging the shooting death of his wife on a highway outside of London An Ontario Court of Appeal rul ing recently upheld the conviction In his new position CSupt Piers will oversee investigations involving criminal affairs and antirackets and general investiga tions Mr Piers was born in Pugwash Nova Scotia He joined the in after serving two years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police So far Mr Piers has served in the departments antirackets branch as a detective sergeant during which time he investigated fraud cases He also served for eight months with the registration branch Eastern Ontario investigating several murders in the Ottawa Valley Town hires new inspector To keep up with the burgeoning growth in Halton Hills the town has hired a new building inspector Kerry Chapman and John Holmes will serve as building in pm to 900 pm Zoning must be changed on Wesleyan Street house The owner of a house in downtown Georgetown could face legal action by the Town or Halton Hills if his house presently zoned commercial is not officially changed to residential zoning Appearing on behalf of his son who purchased the Street house over two years ago Nick of Georgetown asked the towns committee of adjust ment a group of citizens that review minor variances on proper ties for permission to create a se cond storey for an existing building When it was clear that the com mittee would reject Mr application he removed his re quest and was returned fee Mark owner of the house apparently began construc tion on the property before a per mit was issued say town staff members relying on testimony from nearby residents and the towns former building inspector The ad ustment committee minutes from a May 9 meeting quote Mill Street resident Shirley Cleave as saying that the cottage- type building with two bedrooms is now being turned into a duplex The report also quotes Mrs Cleave as saying there are two massive dormers windows on the building which are clearly in violation of the bylaw The pro perty is presently zoned commer cial A second Mill Street resident Diane Malcolm told members of the adjustment committee that all the- construction that took place on the Ferraro property took place before a building permit was issued This was confirmed by the Town of Hills deputy planning director Bruce MacLean who said it is clear that the structure was built prior to the issue of a building permit But Mr said the matter was now under in vestigation with the town staff The minutes of the adjustment committee meeting held to discuss the Street property say that Nick explained the history of his sons property Mr Ferraro told committee members that a permit was obtained to repair part of the buildings struc ture but that a leaky roof and walls that needed repairing was discovered Mr Ferraro said that from time to time the building inspec tor would drop in and warn the that they needed a per mit to continue building Mr informed that inspector that he and his son did not know how much repair work was needed Mr Ferraro was under the im pression that he could have a se cond storey apartment in the downtown area the committee of adjustment report says The members of the committee refused to grant the Ferraros per mission for a variance saying that the application could be out of their jurisdiction But before a final rul ing could take place Mr withdrew his application A complete investigation into tbe zoning bylaw is being conducted by Halton Hills building staff and could come to councillors within the next two weeks Obituary Charles Pirikerton George Kennedy Public School teacher Charles Albert will be sadly missed by his family friends colleagues and the many students he taught during his long and illustrious career Mr Pinkerton who was unmar ried died at St Josephs Hospital in London Ontario June 12 He was Until last year Mr Pinker ton retired teaching he had been at George Kennedy for 30 years Prior to he had worked for five year- as a teacher for the HurOn Board Education Mr received his post- secondary education at Toronto Teachers College and Waterloo Lutheran He is survived by a sister Peggy Mrs Curt Johnson of Palgrave and a brother bob Pinkerton of and several
