group of people that do a great job with very limited means The Friends of the Halton Hills Libraries Is very likely the smallest service club there ever was as to the size of its member ship Its effect on this community however has been large The Friends have as their objective to raise funds to assist the Hills Libraries in their work In order to do that they have in a relatively short time sponsored five large art exhibitions one con cert and four art raffles In these enterprises The Friends were greatly helped by volunteers and by donations from Georgetown business Beginning this year The Friends are also sponsoring and Here and Now two juried exhibitions of the regions photographers and painters It all started with a painting by Reg that was sold in a raffle The Robert Bateman ex hibition followed in the summer of 1984 which had the biggest art opening in the history of the town and a speech by teacher John A Hall Next came the affle or a Bateman etching and a concert by Peter In the summer of 1986 serigraphs and lithographs by Ken Danby were featured in the gallery of the Cultural Centre with Waiter Moos his Toronto dealer of more than 25 years giving an account of their long and rewarding relationship at the opening on July 16 A year later on July it was Jack turn in our town with a large retrospective of his justly famous watercolor paintings and an affec tionate memoir of times spent together delivered by his friend TV personality Peter Trueman And there was another raffle this time of a by Jack In the Toronto painter Bar bara Howard was invited to exhibit her luminous canvasses and the writer and sculptor Rebecca Sister her friend and onetime dealer talked about the meaning of Barbaras art at the opening on June 29 Again one could buy raffle tickets and had the chance to win a by the painter This year on June 28 John A Hall the speaker at the opening in returns to Georgetown This time the celebrated painter illustrator and teacher will exhibit his own work of 50 years The one who will open Johns ex hibition is film maker Christopher Chapman who has such films as A Place to Stand Loring and The persistent Seed Toronto the Cow Rome with Anthony Burgess Kelly and Wilderness to his credit He is the recipient of over 35 recogni tions for his contributions to the art of film including the Queens Silver Jubilee Medal and the Order of Canada The John A Hall exhibition is open to the public on Wednesday June from pm on Magwood the president of The Friends of the Halton Hills Libraries will declare the exhibi tion open at 8 pm and Christopher Chapman will give his talk im mediately after Everybody in terested in meeting these artists should this event No tickets are sold this years gala but the paintings lining the walls of the noble space of our community gallery will be the finest and the food will be as usual delicious The exhibition continues to Aug 19 And by the way all people in terested in joining The Friends of the
