ultimate AilStar team STAT SHEET JOHN Why does the National League hold such a big edge In the AllStar Game The NL has a 3721 lead In the mid summer classic which began in 1933 Even more impressive it has won 26 of the last games played to a deci sion the second game in 1561 ended in a tie Everyone has had his own explana tion for the AllStar success think the National League has better biorhytfams in July said Earl Weaver former manager of the Balti more Orioles Does the National League produce better players Yes according to some experts If so its possible that they have been simply outperforming their Ameri can League counterparts year after year Does the record show that NL play ers have turned in the top career per formances In AllStar Games Lets see Take batting averages for instance Here are the players jrith the high est career batting averages in All- Star Game competition based on a minimum of 15 at bats First base Steve Garvey second base Charlie Gehringer shortstop Vaughan third base Stan Hack 400 outfield Enos Slaughter Dave Winfield 361 Dom and catcher Johnny Bench Five of the eight position players Vaughan Hack Slaughter and Bench performed for National League squads two and for American League teams and one for both leagues But suppose we try to pick a team of alltime AllStar performers Here is one mans ultimate team based on career performances only in First base Steve Garvey NL gives his big gest competition But Garvey leads in extra base hits in AllStar games as well as in Ted KIus- and Bill Skowron also show well But they still fall short of Garvey Second base Charlie Gehringer There is strong competition at the keystone sack Nellie Fox Billy Herman and Jackie Robinson all bit well above 300- in Allstar games The Mechanical Man gets the nod however Gehringers 500 average hits In 20 at bats is the highest compiled by any player in the history of AllStar competition Shortstop Vanghan He edges Ernie Banks based on a higher batting average 364 to and sim ilar power figures in just over half as many All-Star- games to appearances Third base Brooks Robinson George Brett Harmon KUlebrew Ron Santo and Ken all get votes But when offense and defense are combined the AllStar winner is Robinson 289 four extra base hits including a recordtying three tri ples and five Outfielders Willie Mays NL Sua Maslal Ted Williams A real dogfight exists in the outfield But the vote from this quarter Is Mays Muslal and Williams Among them they hold career AllStar marks for most games Mays Muslal 24 runs Mays 20 hits Mays 23 home runs Musial 6 extra base hits Mays Musial total bases Mays Musial runs batted in Williams 12 bases on balls Wil liams and stolen bases Mays Catcher Johnny Beach Johnny Benchs 357 average three home runs and six RBIs give him catching honors ahead of Gary Car ter Walker Cooper Ernie Lombard and Bill Dickey Pitcher Mel Harder Al though Lefty Gomez is the only to win three AllStar contests the choice is Harder of the Clevleand In dians He is the only with 10 or more innings pitched in AllStar games who did not give up a single run He surrendered only nine hits and one base on balls in innings of ac tion in four games while compiling a record Bob Feller Ewell Black- well Don and Juan chal each rate honorable mention To manage these alltime AllStars we turn to Walter Alston of the Na tional League won a re cord seven midseason classics against only two losses Casey Stengel of the American League with four wins in an AllStar record appear ances is runnerup Lots of action at Acton summer camp
