THE HERALD Wednesday July 12 1939 True club system needs look Soccer By ALEX TOUGH The Inter Countys Ancient Mariners are going through a tough spell Beginning the season with several injuries and the strain continues into the eighth and ninth weeks What is even more in teresting is that the team has yet to pick up one single point from their games to date In three of them goals in the last minutes have put paid to achieving the one point and last week It was the final 2d minutes which saw Marlin Travel Streetsville knock in four unanswered goals to nullify the twogoal lead Mariners had built up until that section of the match In the end were worthy win ners and luckless Ancients will have to pull out some stops in order to remain in the top flight Acton Villa are on somewhat of a revival these days and are creating a few surprises on the way Defeating Meteor although by only one goal is a measure of success not to be taken lightly The other first division game ended abruptly when stand in referee called the game minutes or so Into the first half Eagles were hosting Crown and Anchor in this encounter After issuing several warnings for dissent a disputed score came from the home team with the visitors claiming offside which was not the case More claims for decisions came front Crown and Bill had had enough he said upon leaving In the second division United Meteors second team are running away with the opposition at their heels A wide open result over Milton gained another two points Meanwhile defeated Stingers and Tarn defeated Ajax by 21 to round off the results There has to be a place for house league style play however I am not in favor of the two styles of registration which gives us house league and competitive players watched a game last week at the youth age level and saw one team with players and the other with more than a full squad Surely the object of the system is to the kids the skills and tactics of the game whilst very importantly giving them fun and exercise Fun and exercise will not be achieved whilst sitting on the bench There is substitution allowed and there are set times locally for substitu tion Huge scores can be run up when one team has a full plus squad and the other has less than the complement Players sign up or are signed up and then drafted to teams It is not possible to have a full history of the player with holiday times etc ir the profile Coaches change the age groups and the new man or woman will have a hard time choosing players On the other hand the com petitive team coach is restricted the players chosen for the duration of the season There are of course circumstances allowing changes However each player registered as rep can be quite costly when changes are made to the roster I believe all players should register to play in the club system and play where the clubs feel fit I also believe that the represen tative teams should be just as the word implies Players should be chosen when they are able to play based upon merit at the time the games are scheduled Just as na tional teams are or provin cial for that matter The squad should be interchangeable as re quired by form injury availability etc South America Brazil in par ticular has given us much exciting soccer in the past years or so Hopefully the newest trend will not catch on A couple of players now playing in Sweden assaulted a referee during a recent game The referee was left unconscious for a brief time after being kicked in the head Four players were arrested in the full incident In recent years the violence attached to the game has been confined to the fans and although rising in England had moved around other centres sadly It is probably a sign of modern times which we live in generally Violence is the modern day curse Players should play the game Officials should officiate Ad ministrators should administrate And not interfere with tasks other than their own sphere of opera tions At the same time we should be looking to upgrade the stan dards of alt The current leaders in the East and West leagues are Toronto and Vancouver respectively Van couver are ten points ahead of nearest rivals Calgary and ob viously are streets in front Toron to are in a tight race with North York only two points adrift and Hamilton three points down tied Vancouver in the most recent fixture a creditable result against
