ago wants the public to write Halton North Wall Elliot in an appeal for funding to bring her son home from a Penn sylvania hospital Paul received severe brain damage in the single car accident and he is still in a very low level coma He Is now receiving treat ment at the Lake Erie Institute of Rehabilitation but Mrs Franks believes her son could better res pond in a home environment Right now is paying the to a month fees to and that only represents 75 per cent of the total costs but the hospital is accepting it as full pay ment she said Canada spends 8 million a year to keep Canadians in American hospitals she said Mrs Franks makes the trip down to Pennsylvania to be with her son virtually every weekend Mrs Franks said she is prepared to give up her a month job in to stay at home with her son but the financial assistance isnt available In Ontario and she said no hospital will be able to pro vide the kind of treatment Paul needs to respond Every place I call in Ontario says Pauls too low a level hes too deep in a coma she said Ontario hospitals only give ex tensive rehabilitation treatment to higher level patients with more chance of recovering she said They say his prognosis isnt very good but hes still a human be ing Why doesnt the government save these people The Ontario government is offer ing Paul a chronic care bed for a year but all he gets for that is to lie in bed and rot and deteriorate said Mrs Franks Im not prepared to put him in to chronic care Why the hell do the hospitals save these kids if they dont give you any support at the end Dr Phil Cambie who looks after Paul in says he would benefit from a home environment We feel that the home environ ment is good for the patient especially for Paul Franks said Dr in a telephone inter view It would be a good place for him ina more familiar environment But he said Paul needs 24hour care If hes discharged home he would need somebody there all the time he said Dr Cambie said Paul does have some recognition of his mother and his father Jim and be is following some simple commands But he will need feeding and permanent care for the rest of his life be said Dr Cambie said Chedoke hospital in Hamilton could accept Paul for a short period but there are no beds available and he needs longterm care Mrs Franks wants people to write North MPP Walt Elliot at IB C Martin St in Milton to express support for the financial considerations needed to bring Paul and others like him home Chedoke medical staff have evaluated Paul and they are recommending the government sponsor hours a week home care
