province students The Region s students are slight ly above the provincial average in physics while slightly below in chemistry the Halton Board of Education superintendent of educational services curriculum Graeme Barret told trustees at a recent board meeting The Ontario Ministry of tion s test was administered dur ing the 88 school year Mr Barret said a team of Halton teachers are currently analyzing the results and will be advising in dividual schools which courses that need most attention In the subject of physics students were tested in the areas of mechanics waves and sound light current electricity elec and atomic struc ture and nuclear physics Chemistry courses tested were introduction to chemistry atomic structure and aggregates gases and mole problems chemical reactions quantitive and qualitative and solutions Lethal drug stolen A lethal drug used by veterinarians in the euthanasia of animals was stolen from a Milton clinic last week Oie vial of and disposable were stolen from the Veterinary Clinic on the Guelph Line between Sideroad and Sideroad din ing the afternoon of July 13 Halton Regional Police say The Provincial Police in London also report that six vials of the drug were recently stolen from a London area veterinary clinic Sergeant Welsh of the Halton Regional Police Force says there is no connection between the two thefts Sergeant Welsh thinks that in both cases whoever stole the drug mistook it for another Both break and entering currences are currently under in vestigation Trustees were alio told that of the total number of chemistry students in the Halton board per cent are female In physics the ratio is 38 per cent female and 62 per cent male These statistics correspond with those of the province other school boards Mr Barret was pleased with the enrolment ratio of female to male students in chemistry But he said more work had to be done in popularizing physics among females This means encouraging some parents to lose their stereo typical attitudes towards physics being a subject for only boys he said The board also plans to continue running in conjunction with the University of Guelph The Girls in Physics Program Mr Barret also painted out teachers par in the lower grade levels need to reassess their programs to encourage girls to continue their studies in the physical sciences There Is also a need to establish more female role models the in struction of the physical sciences Mr Barret said Couple wants street paved A Georgetown couple fed up with petitioning Hills sent a let ter to the town recently asking to have their street paved Elizabeth and David have lived on Crescent tn Georgetown since They say the street is 99 per cent in ex cellent condition The only sign of neglect and Toronto Area committee the organization form to search for a solution to southern Ontario s waste disposal crisis If Peel pulls out of the committee the organization could fold A resolution was passed at Peel Region last council meeting to meet with Premier David Peterson and James Bradley Minister of the Environment The details of that meeting were not available at press time Peel along with Durham York and Metropolitan Toronto formed the GTA earlier this year Part of each region mandate in the is to suggest a landfill site for Metro s waste disposal Halton Regional chairman Peter Pomerqy who represents at the GTA meetings says Peel decision on whether or not to re main in the committee could affect all the other regions I would assume that if Peel s out of the GTA then there would probably be no GTA said the chairman Tuesday But he added that Peel would have to decide what they want to do before the GTA s future is determined Recently the Toronto press pointed to the Acton quarry at Sideroad 22 and Fourth Line as be ing on a pnvate ministry list as Halton s landfill site for GTA membership While Halton Region has not officially endorsed the site Peel has chosen a proper northeast Brampton ac cording to Peel s planning com and acting chief ad mimstrator Peter Allen The site is located north of Coun Road near Airport Road But the GTA is not helping Peel solve its present garbage crisis Mr Alien said We have less than a year s capacity and we re desperate Mr Allen referred to the Britannia Road landfill site that expires for use in 1990 been seeking approval from the Ministry of the Environ ment and were just not getting it he said The dissent is between us and the province Peel chairman Frank Bean and Mississauga Mayor Hazel Callion met with the environment minister last week Results of this meeting will lead to Peel s deci sion which will be announced at a Regional meeting in Peel Aug 10 said Mr Allen Although the GTA could collapse if Peel opts out of the committee chairman says it would not be in that Region best interest to leave the Greater Toronto Area Peel needs the GTA more than the GTA needs Peel said the chairman Ynttminiir it
