Page IS THE HERALD Wednesday July Tony Waiters nominated Canada needs strong national coach By ALEX TOUGH The life or a sporting profes sional personality regardless of the sport is a relatively short one in the playing sense There are several exceptions Puskas of Hungary and Real Madrid fame lasted into his forties Nolan Ryan is still playing and in his forty- second year Archie Moore was older than that when winning the world boxing champlonshipThere are others However the exceptions are few compared with the many who play for a living The pros earn what they can whilst they can hence partially the reasons for large It is after they end their playing career which I am for the moment interested Some remain in their sport as coaches managers ad ministrators publicity persons or in the media as reporters or com mentators Those places are also few and it is sometimes a rare talent to obtain media positions except for those with pull The point of all this is coming The best coach Canada soccer has had is Tony Waiters a former Blackpool and English interna tional goalkeeper Waiters coach ed in England after his playing career closed in the lower leagues and without a great deal of distinc tion He was still a good coach and manager Coming to this side of the Atlantic he became the suc cessful coach of the Vancouver with a NASL champion ship to his laurels He went on to become the Canada national team coach and led the team to a great Olympic challenge and only penalty kicks saw the magnificent Brazil win and late goals from France put paid to effort Under Waiters the squad qualified for the last World Cup and acquitted well in spite of no goals Something happened Waiters left and has pursued a teaching career with his Soccer World clinics across the country and throughout the USA The news to day Is that the following Tony Taylors move to the CSL is to ap point a new national coach and that appointment will be made next month Although we have not qualified for we must ensure that we do so for 1994 when only one team will qualify from our zone as the USA host and gain a place for that reason The appointment of a tried and trusted coach is an absolute necessity if we are to have a chance of qualifying Tony Waiters could be our man and I hear that he is available under certain condi tions We could do a lot worse and not much better by the return of Tony Waiters Thank goodness he is one who re mained in the game As of the moment the CSL con tinues with Vancouver the only undefeated side and Toronto and North York have each lost one game Hamilton have played one more game than most and lie in third spot in the East division behind North York and Toronto Finance seems to be a problem in Ottawa and the team is in difficul ty as is the CFL only with much more trouble Can this be the reason for Increased taxes all round As Georgetown increases in size and resulting population so too will vandalism inevitably The best way to reduce the spate of trouble is to keep the perpetrators oc cupied in using their energies in more lawful pursuits The volunteer organizations par ticularly sports will be hard press ed to take in all potential ap plicants with the present facilities available Once again note that you will have to be aware of the need for increased fields in order to take care of the likely numbers in the near future It is now that you should be making councillors aware of the needs and ensure that the promised facilities are there when the influx happens not after wards when it will be too late It was good to see our minor atoms take part in this years We tournament although not win ning a game Results are not of ficially recorded in the minisoccer age groups the little ones acquit ted themselves well and they are the first entrants from the town in the Robbie for many years Our copybook was blotted some years ago when a team failed to show up for their games and presumably we were ignored for that reason Of course in recent seasons we have not seen much support for rep teams and the en tries have not been forthcoming The Ontario Cup is winding down towards the semifinals with one more round prior to that section of the tourney Teams began in May and I for one have made or received more than calls to date in the organization of the Cup Only Burlington and Oakville have any Halton interest remaining in the cup Burlington has seven teams and Oakville five hoping to reach the later stages The much criticized SC last years Junior Theatre takes to stage The time has finally come Junior Theatre Camp has been hard at work since July and their production is ready for the stage Thursday July 20 at 730 pm The Last Performance will be presented by this talented group of young actors and actresses at John
