on the B Raider bluellne and a first round Ontario Hockey League draft choice Trent also won a bronze medal in shot put at the provincial high school track and field finals While his com to hockey permitted him time to dabble in basketball and rugb it goes without saying Trent would been a team leader at GDHS in both sports not to mention football Athlete of the Year female Jen Scott The heart and soul of Acton High athletics Jen set the Powderpuff highlights Rumours run rampant By PAUL SARGENT Herald Special Talk of a juicedup baseball has surfaced in the powderpuff league as are on a draiiatic in crease A recent league has proved futile so one suspects that steroids may be in volved The league president Lorl is looking into these allega tions However a slate of games did last week and the standings are more confused than ever Red Sox 17 Blue Zone A real colorful affair with the Sox outlasting the Zone Karen Ap- pleyard and Sherry Love paced the Red attack with a triple apiece Laura Richardson played a great game defensively and offen sively as did Chris Stoyles and Sharon Zmija Good effort by all Greeners Life a Peach Shad Ladies A minor upset as Peach toppled a strong black brigade Bonnie Schell poked out a double and Deb added a twobagger In recent weeks Paul Titus team has shown signs of life with greatly improved play Shady Ladies recent slump came to a head with this loss Shaynes girls came up with a clunker but Donna Davey and Carol Dean kept things respectable Barb McBean and Hofing both went three- for three to support a fine pitching performance from Metier Pink Cadillacs 15 Blue Lite 5 Pink Caddies piled up a big first inning lead and cruised to a big win over highflying Blue Lite Dawn led a wellbalanced hit ting attack with two doubles Sharon was the bright star defensively for the Cad dies Annette Van Dyke and Betty pitched a solid game to keep the Blue club off balance In an otherwise close game Blue Lite couldnt overcome a huge first inning hole Linda Armstrong and Mary Kelly were offensive stars for Colin s club going three- for three Angela Dadd clubbed out a big homer for the Liters who made It a good effort after a disastrous Cinderella six game unbeaten streak to the Ontario Cup senior mens soccer final This underdog group also cops Story of the Year honors Ironically they folded after their fairy tale season Most Courageous Athlete Mat thew Fleet The champion Acton swimmer was badly hurt In a vacation swimming accident and despite being confined to a wheelchair Matthew returned to mingle with his friends and classmates at the athletic banquet last spring Personality of the Year Adam Bennett Seemingly mature beyond his years down and personable Adam has lived a Canadian boy dream over the past two years A top OHL draft choice last year he went sixth to Chicago in the NHL lottery in June Living the dream Adam is destined for further achievements Columnists of the Year tie Len Landry and Alex Tough HYUNDAI OWNERS Fur 8731818 Len Tunes- as they re affectionately referred to here at the Herald are lighthearted often comical refreshing and well written Len has a real knack for story telling Alex meanwhile continues to churn out volumes of informative local national and international soccer news balancing it off with darts in the wintertime He one of those souls who helps make a s job easier Correspondent of the Year Norma Maynard A tough call here but Norma prompt cheer delivery of tennis and Legion bridge news always made a Mon day morning brighter Normas as quick a camera as she is with a racquet too Promoter of the Year Joanne Wilson Boxing empressario Don King has nothing on Joanne And certainly a lot cuter With phone and press release ever ready Joanne made sure the rec department word was always heard Disappointment of the Year Raider playoffs While coach Pete Sturgeon and GM Bob Hooper did an outstanding job with the Jr B Raiders last year it was too bad a great season end ed abruptly with a second straight four game sweep in the playoffs But as I said to Dave Kentner the other day I fully expect to see the Raiders again next spring when they travel to
