in all shapes and sizes and have threatening names like Butchers Knife the Col And they re rumored to have gobbled up countless numbers of water travellers The rapids on the Ottawa River are however exciting I spent my second weekend in two years battl ing the swirling eddies It really matter to me that the first rapid was named after a logger who drowned there over years ago There were 12 of us in the boat our intrepid guide a tnangle of sunscreen on his nose telling us that it was his duty to warn that boats can flip people can pop out and people can drown But Mike said in his seven years as an instructor with Owl Rafting this hadn happened He about to let it happen last weekend We all breathed a sigh of relief I think most of us had heard about the rafters in B C two years ago who quite make Jtbe big wave The morning of our big rafting adventure some people were asleep on the bus that drove us to the rafts Viscious rumor had it that most of us t get to bed un til 5 a but were up at the crack of dawn This may or may not be true But everyone on our raft per formed like the were made to paddle or stroke stroke stroke as went the chant that began lightly and built to a crescendo as we the big rapids Every rapid adventure was videotaped but you had no control over how silly you might appear A still photographer captured me at my best with one leg straight in the air A friend of mine rcogmz ed my running shoe Bodies were flying at some points as we rounded large crests of water in our large rubber dingy raft Christine behind me claim ed I was sitting on her lap My tent buddy said her and Louise became very close as the raft twisted and spun through Black Shoot and McCoy s rapid Our bow men Graham and Phil were seen shrieking and grimacing as the waves hit the boat This was all according to the video You don notice any of this while you re rafting Even our guide Mike looked a lit lie pale coming through one of the rapids But we had total faith in him After running what was con the most dangerous rapid to spill out on we all gave ourselves a big hand We clapped screamed and felt like conquerors But the best part of rafting was the kind of team spirit that you get out there on the waves battling nature And sort of winning There were lots of kisses good bye Sunday lots of phone numbers exchanged and a promise to pass around the videotape that someone had bought Me I m going out to practice my paddling for next year Stroke stroke stroke- By OIL Ottawa Bureau Thomson News Service This year it the turn of the Canadian Museum of Civilization to bask in the glory of a stunning new building and the accompany ing publicity Last year the National Gallery of Cdndda moved into a glittering new showcase amid much fanfare The National Aviation Museum s priceless collection of aircraft is now displayed in a shiny new building Even the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography has a new home near the Chateau in central Ottawa Now Victor Suthren wonders whether it his turn Suthren is associate director of the Canadian War Museum the neglected cousin of Ottawa museums All these things were necessary Now we re silting here with our finger the dyke while the water s building up on the other side hoping it s our turn before the dyke breaks Suthren said in an interview What s building up is a torrent of people visiting the museum Visitors declined to a low of about 180 in 1987 because of construction at the nearby gallery site at the Royal Canadian Mint next door and the museum s own front courtyard Those projects were completed last year Last year also brought a visit by Queen Beatrix who officially open ed the museum exhibit on the liberation of the Netherlands The museum also benefitted from the opening of the national gallery which is a big drawing card for tourists Those factors combined to in crease visitors by 30 per cent in 1988 The museum may hit 300 this year and is projecting million visitors annually in five years But that avalanche of humanity is causing problems in the three- storey stone Iding which once housed the national archives GRIDLOCK A couple of limes this year we actually had gridlock at our door nobody could get and nobody could get out We re trying to figure out ways to handle that he said Suthren can offer visitors six machines and a pop machine while a block down Sussex Dnve the National Gallery operates a glassed in restaurant with a great view of the Ottawa River has an operating budget of compared to million for the museum of civihza tion It s not that the government isn t aware of the problem m sure they are But there are only so many dollars to go around So far the museum of civiliza has soaked up almost million for construction landscap ing and professional fees Another million may be needed to com plete displays and other interior fimshes The national gallery cost million to build and millions more for displays is optimistic that the war museum will get its share His operating budget rose by a third this year Communications M Marcel Masse made an exhaustive tour of the museum and its storage facility Vimy House Masse is now considenng the op tions laid out for the museum s future in a confidential report prepared by a consultative com mittee One option is to build an ad dition at the rear of the museum A studv said S13 million could be spent to enlarge the museum by per cent That would provide room for a mini theatre a restaurant and a dramatic in crease in the museum s sq m of public space the new gallery m of public spacet House located elsewhere in Ottawa would be upgraded to serve as a national resource centre for military heritage conservation The expansion is desperately need Suthren said Trie museum has almost one million artifacts worth about million but can display GOO at a time The national gallery is stor huge paintings from the museum s 7 war art col lection one of the world s finest Suthren said MIDGET SUB There are 8 000 small arms a German midget submarine and V flying bomb from the Second World War and dozens of armored and support vehicles The museum has hundreds of uniforms dating back to the 18th century which are rarely seen due to lack of space There is so little space that ex don t go beyond 1945 leaving out Canada s role in the Korean War and in peacekeeping opera In addition the increasing number of visitors is taking a toll Exhibits are years out of date and falling apart as are the carpets in the medals room The other museums have had their shots at it and we are under the same kind of pressures and demands from the public and we just can begin to meet it right now said But the commemorative work is not the only area where the museum is suffering Suthren the interpretation and history of conflict is being neglected School children and teachers are writing in for background such issues as NATO peacekeeping and the pros and cons of maintaining armed forces The museum can t begin to do the job he said We re getting people who have no experience of war wanting us to give them the answers so they can make good political choices Nobody in the country is answering these questions and were getting them Canada war museum is the poorest in the Commonwealth Suthren said The Australian War Memorial in Canberra has a 10 million budget and employees while New Zealand has a stateof the art war museum WRITE US A LETTER The Herald wants to hear from If have an opinion want toevpress or a comment to make send us a letter or drop the office Our address is By Ian Weir It s fascinating to discover what other people reillv think of vou Thit s why it was so interesting to stumble across a Canada newspaper feature in which new Canadians were asked to give their blunt opinion of the rest of us Most interesting of all was the opinion of a recent Italian im mignnt Anna who zeroed right in on the complex issue of Canadian emotions Asked Ms Do Cana dians have emotions I first thought Canadians must have taken the King Tut mummy as their model Well Thank you Ms We appreciate frankness and we II give you our immediate emo tional response jus as soon as a Royal Commission has determined what it is To digress for a moment I had actually been giving some per thought to the Canadian psyche as a result of my own ex perience on Canada Day I was nattered to be invited by a group called Read Canada to take part in the festivities as one of the celebrity readers who would be entertaining a bunch of kids So 1 was feeling full of mvself as I sauntered into the venue and was introduced to the who was giving a reading just ahead of me a pleasant fellow named Bob never of me either it which point we both had one of those insights into the In the States vou d have to make sure readers had done at least three spots on Carson lest the audience feel cheated and turn ugl In Cinada can just pick out of the phone book and trust that the audience will feel for not recognizing them In an case we were debating the assessment of Ms who apparently perceives Canada as a nation of people who wouldn dam if thev had a hole in their socks Just for starters we can certain ly debunk her theory that we adopted King Tut as a role model This is ridiculous no Canadian would imitate someone so tatious If we were looking for a role- model in the Egyptian royal ly we be much more likelj to choose Tut lesser known brother Bert Bert dtdn play a large role in affairs of state but he did have a nice office and an indexed pension It s also absurd to suggest that we have no emotions at all Of course we have emotions several of them And them down from the attic just as soon as we remember which trunk they re in Stilt its probably true that Canadians don t have quite the range and intensity of emotions as say the Americans Just consider the cultural icons of the two tries have Geraldo and is e e Front Page twllenge and Tommy Hunter The question of course is why we re like this in the first place Or theory holds that Canadian stocism derives from the large Scottish contingent among the ear settlers the point being that who can endure a Highland November with nothing on under his kilt can suffer almost am thing in silence A second holds that the cold Canadian climate forces u to control our emotions almost from In temperate climes family members can indulge themselves in the luxun of veiling and stomp ing out of the house If you grow up in Winnipeg you learn early in life to avoid saving anything that might get you chucked out into the yard for the night A third and more controversial theory maintains that our com parative lack of emotionalism is a simple matter of economics Ac cording to this theory we started out with a full complement of emo tions but over the years sold many of them to American multinational interests As such the Free Trade deal can be seen as a brilliant scheme to get some of these emotions back Under the terms of the deal the Americans get pretty much everything they want But in return we Canadians get to feel pretty peeved In short Ms can take heart We may at present be a quiet and undemonstrative bunch little given to angry outbursts and shouts of indignation But our government Is working on this problem
