THE HERALD OUTLOOK July Page 15 Director of Officiating NHL selects Lewis as head ref By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor Longtime Georgetown resident Bryan Lewis has been appointed to the position of Director of Of ficiating for the National Hockey League The announcement was contained in a joint press release issued by NHL Offices in Toronto Montreal and New York Wednes day evening At the same time the NHL an nounced the appointments of Harris to the position of Assistant Director of Officiating and Will as Coordinator of Develop ment The announcement was in troduced by Jim Gregory the Leagues VicePresident of Hockey Operations Gregory was quoted as saying We are pleased to announce the appointments of these three gentlemen who bring with them a combined total of over years ex perience in the NHL officiating ranks All three have exhibited dedication and leadership throughout their careers especial ly during their recent years in of ficiating management positions at both the NHL and amateur levels Lewis succeeds John Cauley also of Georgetown who died unexpectedly in June from complications following surgery In an exclusive telephone inter view with the Herald from the Toronto offices Lewis had this to say about his newly ac quired position and the man he suc ceeded Im excited its another challenge and I accept the challenge I enjoy challenges I look forward to working with NHL people both on and off the ice It the NHL is one of the organizations a person can work for I consider myself very for tunate to have worked both with and for John The ex perience will definitely aid the transition into my new officiating job Lewis has been associated with the NHL in various capacities for As NHL records show he began his professional officiating career in and worked as a referee in the Central Western and American hockey leagues In the season he worked his first game in the NHL During his officiating career Lewis was selected to referee in four Stanley Cup Final series 1983 and 1985 He worked the AllStar game played in Los Angeles and refereed Canada Cup games He retired from active of ficiating following the NHL season having worked games Lewis joined the NHL super visory staff for the 198687 season as coordinator of development and his responsibilities included the recruitment and development of minor league officials The Ontario Hockey Association honored Lewis in 198889 for his work in minor hockey Midget girls fastball Legion squad takes two Georgetown travelled to Milton and came away with a victory on Monday Carrie Gallant pitched for Georgetown and went the seven in nings striking out seven walking one and hitting one batter Gallant gave up one run in the first two in the second and two in the seventh Georgetowns big night at the plate reaching base five times on a single and four walks Sue Subject reached base three times on two singles and a double and assisting on four put outs Georgetown fielders of Jeanette Korzack and Cin dy Dunn played a strong defensive game Georgetown 9 Georgetown played at home on July 18 against a strong- club and came away with a close 97 win Again Gallant started on the mound and struck out seven walking three Georgetown got their runs in the first third and fourth inning each scoring three Sue Subject had the big bat in the first hitting a triple to bring in Brandford and Gallant who had reached base on walks Subject was then brought home by Korzack In the third inning the big blow came from Shrubsole who hit a homerun with two on to give Georgetown a lead In the fourth Tracy Weeks reached base on a single Lewis reached base on a perfect bunt and Jeanette Brandford followed with a double to bring in Weeks Gallant came up with a long single to bring in Lewis and Brandford Tracy Weeks played a strong game at second with two put outs and two assists Georgetowns next home game is July 25 at the Fairgrounds at 30 Batting cage to be unveiled By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The culmination of two years of time and effort will be realized Wednesday evening when the Georgetown Baseball Association in conjunction with the Kinsmen Club unveils its long awaited Batting page The project funded jointly by the GBA and the local Kinsmen Club was headed by former GBA executive member Rich with able assistance from Hal Ridley The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for pm Wednesday evening and will be attended by representatives of the Town of Hills the GBA and the Kinsmen Club The batting cage is located adjacent toDiamond A the Fairgrounds The project cost approximately with the Kinsmen Club bear ing the brunt of the monies needed The Kinsmen Club donated 12000 the GBA came up with 6500 and a donation was gratefully accepted from the Halton Hills service clubs Slopitch League The batting cage will be run by Coordinator and will be open to the public As yet however a schedule for public use has not been finalized The principal ownersusers will be GBA teams and teams in the Kinsmen Girls Softball League The is suitable for use by both hardball and softball teams Members of the public wishing more information on usage times are urged to contact Coordinator at Firestone Hoosiers on winning toll The Hills Firestone inched closer to the 500 mark with a 128 victory over Burl ington on Sunday This brought their record to six wins and seven tosses in league play The game was more lopsided than the final score would indicate The scored six runs in the first and three in the second and led by a score of after four inn ings In the
