Page 16 THE HERALD OUTLOOK Solurday July 1989 TBall acknowledges sponsors assistance We would like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors who have contributed to the funding for each team Late entry for the column this week as I was away for the whole weekend on my annual jaunt to Ohio for golf Disturbing is the news filtering down from the CSL with Calgary now having financial troubles Together with Ottawa this is definitely not the kind of knowledge which will help the league The league is based upon a low budget and teams have to operate within a cost structure in cluding salaries for players The attempt to restrict cost is a good idea and looked as though the con trol would prove to be worthwhile As the only avenue for pro soccer in Canada at this level it is hoped that solutions will work out for the better In the meantime Steelers move up the standings by one spot and are now tied with North York in pursuing Toronto in the East Van couver still lead the West in spite of dropping both points to a young Winnipeg squad It would be a great pity should the leagues money problems grow and lead to yet another demise The Ontario Cup has wound its way down to the last four teams in each division and Peel Halton has 16 teams left in contention Men tioned last seasons senior men finalists a few weeks ago Braga Arsenal and the problem of alleg ed illegal players They appear to be in trouble again with their last game being abandoned late in the second half due to a little spot of bother on the field Ulster Thistle were the opponents and Braga ap pear to be the guilty party ac cording to reports All these matters are not good for the game and animals behave better than humans is my view The game does not need them Due to an emergency situation I was called out for duty and took in a ladies match between Georgetown and Oakville It was heartening to see some of my former players take part Lisa Allen scored a cracker of a with her left foot from outside the area Unfortunately the visitors netted three for the win Penny still trips all over the field but does cause the opposition problems Carol Johnston still patrols the side of and gets stuck in as of old proved to be just a little too strong in the end Coach of the local team is Jeff Milton referee Tom Allen was prevented from officiating at the EaglesCrown match the other week due to a car accident on the way to the game The game was started by BUI and abandon ed after 15 minutes the cause and result to be decided by the Inter County league Crown also had a game not even started when visiting Sightless at the beginning of the season This week the woes continued for the luckless Crown when the officials did not show for a recast field for their game against Meteor All due to a mixup in communications Soccer league problems Meanwhile Mariners woes 01 b different ilk continue In additior to the opening season injuries team now has Dave Chapman and Rick Middaugh join the group of crocks Chapman tore the ligaments in his ankle and followed up an arm injury sustained against Marlin with a leg splice at work Talking of the Ancient Manners a lady reader graciously drew my attention to my lack of knowledge of poets and poetry You may recall my waxing on the origin of the soccer Ancient Mariners a few weeks ago and comparing them to the poetic Ancient Manner I stand corrected and apologize to the true author of the Ancient Mariner Samuel Taylor Coleridge and te John of Sea Fever from where the words were taken In my defence I say that both poets were English although great and I am not of course I am a haggisbasher Mariners lost 26 to Villa last week and remain safely at the foot of the table Marlin head the first division by two points over Meteor and Eagles who both have a game in hand Crown have nine points and Villa seven handed out an away loss to Eagles by 14 Se cond division standings are not available Laurentians held the leaders United to a tie at Derry field Stingers lost at Alcott to Tam by the odd goal in three and Milton went down to Trex- con A belated thank you to Paul Svoboda now late sports editor of the Herald who is off to Orillia and pastures new who included this name in his roil of honor in his final farewell to Halton Hills Good luck lad DARTS A meeting of the Region of Peel darts league teams captains is set for
