Page 12 THE HERALD August 1989 Surnmerside is hurting much more than most of us know Make a Wish finds a home for a stereo On The Hill With Garth Turner This small story may not have a lot to do with our everyday lives and our community but it has a lot to do with the country we live in A couple of weeks ago I told you Id be going to Prince Edward Island not for the holiday that Dorothy has been expecting but because the Prime Ministers Of fice asked me to do it Last Aprils federal budget was tough on everybody hiking taxes and cutting government spending though not enough In the name of reducing the countrys deficit it hurt But there are some people hur ting a a lot more than us About 15000 of them live on in and around the town of Summer- side The biggest employer there is the base which has been in Surnmerside since the Second World War About 13000 people work there with another jobs in town dependent on the base In all were talking about 30 per cent of the local workforce But CFB Surnmerside is going to shut down It costs the feds about 35 million a year to keep it open so a search- operation can be run out of there along with regular flights to maintain our national presence on the east coast and keep an eye on foreign fishing boats Along with 13 other bases across Canada Surnmerside will be history in a couple of years and thats why I went there The locals have mounted a huge campaign to save the base They marched in Surnmerside and they marched in Ottawa They have written letters taken petitions and literally covered their town in yellow ribbons of hope Early last Saturday morning I took a taxi from my motel room in and drove through the red soil and potato fields to Surnmerside I went to the home of one of the leaders and he then drove me through the base Its huge over 200 buildings 180 of which are houses for military people Theres a new a hospital schools massive hangars heating plants and of course runways and maintenance buildings Afterwards I went a meeting vith members of the group spearheading a drive to have the feds change their mind There was anger in that room and a few tears People viewed me as a representative of the government which wants to close down teir town and it was a tough role for me to play I listened and learned just what has already happened there The real estate market has collapsed with prices down per cent In vestment has dried up The largest contractor in town has laid off his last employee People are plagued with rumors and afraid of the future Then I met with the mayor coun cillors and other community leaders Afterwards I met with a large group of citizens and after that with other local leaders in At the end of the day I was ex hausted but energized by the need to get this very human message to Ottawa Its one thing to look at numbers on a piece of paper and entirely another to see the real con sequences of government actions The irony is that closing the base may so depress the region that Ot tawa may spend more than it saves in social and economic aid I came back home and wrote a report for the Prime Ministers of fice It was frank and honest It said we need to talk more to these people and come up with some creative ideas which will help fill the void when the base goes Alter natives which the Prime Minister already has people looking into though it is a longer process than NORTHVIEW CENTRE 211GUelphSt Georgetown the folks in Surnmerside would like Over the past few days I have been touch with my new friends in Surnmerside Ive told them that as one MP I can promise to cause any reversal of the govern ments decision But what I can do is help them tell their story in Ottawa and it is a story worth telling Im still new to politics and I have a great learn But it strikes me that governments have to be responsible and sensitive to every Me that they touch Register for Fair parade Calling all parade fanatics The Georgetown Fair is putting together a parade for
