generous philan whose benefactions are still enriching the lives of ordinary people Perhaps the greatest of North industrialist philanthropists was George Eastman 18o4 who made his fortune by inventing a simple and inexpensive camera and marketing it brilliantly throughout the world Eastman gave more than million in large and small dona tions to individuals and to public causes in his home city Rochester His generosity may have had ripple effect since that city and its surrounding Monro are today rich in museums parks and other places of public enjoyment that were financed by such wealthy as Edward Bausch Margaret Woodbury Strong and Frank Gannett After Eastman built his stately home at East Ave in other wealthy families soon engag ed their own architects to design equally grand houses on the same broad and leafy thoroughfare which has retained its noble ap pearance to this day CAREER CHANGE As an undistinguished clerk at a Rochester bank in the Eastman was more interested In the thennew hobby of photography than in things financial Making his hobby a business venture he systematically applied the principles of scientific research automated mass of cameras and photographic supplies intensive distribution and shrewd marketing He even coined the name Kodak which sounded right in several languages and saw his fortune grow rapidly as picturetaking turned into a hugely popular international pastime Unlike some highly successful AUTOS FOR SALE CHEV Impala PS AC as is best offer 1985 Bon Brougham fully loaded excellent CHEVY new rebuilt C I V8 Aluminum Trafalgar and Maple 2nd House of Main Stout South industrialists of his time George Eastman seemed to have a com drive to use his wealth for the benefit of others Much of his million in benefactions went to higher education including the funding of two major universities for black students in the then segregated S South But a ma jor priority was to make Rochester a still more desirable place to live Among other projects Eastman financed a symphony orchestra and a school music ihe loved music although he am musical talent Eastman Theatrt in n Rochester International Museum of Photography and the 96b acre Durand Eastman Park near the shores of Lake Ontario The photography museum hous ed in an impressive building opened early this year and Theatre used for the showing of movie classics are located on the grounds of George Eastman House which itself is closed major renova tions It will reopen as a museum next January Note also that despite what you might read elsewhere the Eastman Kodak Co plants are closed to visitors Tours of the two sprawling plants had become so popular apparently that the com pany found itself unable to handle the numbers of visitors The seven year old Strong Museum in Rochesters Manhattan Square was financed by the late Margaret Woodbury Strong daughter of John Woodbury an early and therefore rich Kodak investor and the- widow of a wealthy New England businessman Throughout her lifetime she col a vast number of dolls which became the nucleus of the museum Now the dolls represent only six per cent of the Strong Museum collection which touches almost all aspects of everyday middleclass from to 1940 toys furniture household appliances chinaware and so on Of the current special displays at the Strong one is devoted to golf and another to circuses and mtd ways For children between three and seven the Strong has a museum within a museum call One History Place SCIENCE CENTRE Of keen interest to children and adults alike is the Rochester Museum thanks largely to the revolutionary impact of the 1822 opening of the Erie Canal Until then the products of the area s farms had been sold on ly in the local communities With the advent of the new waterway a remarkable engineering feat for its time several flour milts opened m Rochester to grind the local wheat The flour was floated down the canal on barges to New York and even shipped overseas That brought boom times to both Rochester and New York City which previously had ranked below Boston and Philadelphia in commercial terms Later some chic restaurants and inns have been opened along the banks of the canal creating an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and rustic The most widely acclaimed are The Depot and Richardson Canal Village both at Pittsford 20 fan south of Rochester RENEWAL URGED Tomorrow Sentus proposals are afoot to develop the many neglected sections of the Canal so that the waterway can of fer recreational and touristic op portunities similar to those on the
