combined to make the Annual Georgetown Ladies Softball Tournament held Friday Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds such a success Even the gods of rounders cooperated Sunday as the event wound down Darkening skies and ominous rumbles fittingly provided both background props and a musical score for the tournaments Sunday afternoon denouement Ballinafads Jim Dandies outmuscled Burlingtons Edwards Realty to lay rightful claim to the Championship trophy while Georgetowns Shady Ladies beat the Medial Centre squad from Orangeville in the Consolation Final Throughout the three days of tournament play volunteers worked tirelessly to provide food beverages uptodate game scores and general information for both players and the general public alike These services offered under sometimes hectic and trying conditions impressed all who came in contact with the volunteers and visitors from outoftown left singing the praises of the behindthescenes workers From the opening pitch Friday evening to the trophy presentations late Sunday afternoon and through the various other activities scheduled the Annual Georgetown Ladies League Tournament could best be termed an unqualified success Congratulations the 9th Annual Georgetown Ladies Tournament go hand in glove with the teams first place standing stop the Acton Ladies Powderpuff League Also next summer the Jim Dandies can look forward to home field advantage against challenging teams as the softball park located behind the villages Community Centre will be officially unveiled The power behind the Jim Dandies is 67yearold coach Jim Bailey He was also the driving force behind the park project Eventually the softball park will feature a regulationsize infield regulation screens bleachers and an outfield fence Baileys intention is to offer all area youngsters an op portunity experience the game of softball Erin Township donated to the project the Town of Halton Hills anted up Royal Canadian Legion Branch of Georgetown donated 2000 the Lions and Lioness clubs of Georgetown and Hillsburgh came through with a total of and the Hillsburgh Lions Club will be donating bleachers In addition the Acton Royal Canadian Legion donated to the pro ject and area Brewers Warehouse workers chipped in with The Jim Dandies team has held a number of fundraisers to raise money for the project RELATIONS A sporting type once described the sport of rugby as A party that gotoutofhand Rugby is a game that is hard to describe to the uninitiated It com bines the contact of Canadian football with the flow of soccer mixed with splashes of both field and ice hockey and an occasional touch of mayhem Sportsmanship is stressed and the social aspect of the game is legen dary involving combined with the partaking of the odd also even thirstquenching beverage Area rugby enthusiasts are in for a treat Saturday as the North Rugby Club plays a friendly game against King Edward VII School of Lytham England The match is scheduled for p m Saturday at Neilsons Field on Sinclair Avenue The English side will be arriving in Georgetown Friday evening and players will be billeted locally A social evening is scheduled for Saturday night at the Cedarvale Park athletes efforts By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor For 17yearold Julie Ross of Georgetown her sojourn to Denmark with the Ontario Provin cial squad will hopefully represent the of many highlights in an athletic career that could one day peak with her playing internationally for Canada The Ontario team left Monday for a 10day playing tour of the Scandinavian country with least one game scheduled against the Danish National womens team According to Julie at least two and possibly three more games are on the teams sporting itinerary likely against fellow under18 sides Soccer has become something of a passion for the young Georgetown athlete who will be entering Grade 13 Georgetown District High School this fall She has been involved with the sport for years and was forced to take her soccer ambitions to other venues because of the absence of a girls Rep program in the Georgetown Youth Soccer Club This situation has since been rec tified and sponsored by Apple Auto Glass a Georgetown under18 girls Rep team claimed its first win of the season recently over St Catharines Three years ago Julie took her athletic talents to Brampton However for the past two years she has Should the team emerge on top it would pla in the Ontario Cup Final at the end September with an eye on taking part in National competition scheduled for the first week in October As proof of her worth to Julie has shuttled bet ween defence and the forward lines occasionally taking on the sinker role and has counted nine goals in nine games A serious student sporting an A average she is hoping that her prowess on the soccer pitch might lead to an of an athletic scholarship with an American university She has written to a number of universities in the United States and has received favorable rep- sonses from eight schools to date Regardless of her scholarship chances Julie has her heart and mind set on attending university and majoring in Physical Educa tion At 4 and pounds Julie Ross might not appear to be an in timidating force as a soccer player In terms of intangibles however she more than makes the grade Her intelligence and desire to succeed is obvious She also has heart and
