the crown of i Miss Milton Fair Queen at last years fair and was one of 113 con testants at the Canadian National Exhibition All contestants were billeted at the University of Toronto residence from Sunday evening Wednesday and were required to attend social functions each evening where they were assessed on poise and personality as well as the results of a lengthy interview The final day of competition at the Band Shell was narrowed down to seven queens who were asked to give a prepared speech and from these three were chosen and were required to give an impromptu speech Kelly received her crown from 198889 Fair Queen Kathy First runner up was Price of Schomberg with Dresdens Queen Jennifer Van Racy who was se cond in line Susan Clark of Markdale Fair was given the title of Miss Congeniality Among her many prizes were a suite at the Royal York Hotel at her disposal for the three weeks of the Exhibition a Chrysler conver tible for a year a scholar ship from Canada Packers a four piece place setting of Royal china an encyclopedia Bntanmca a watch and numerous other beautiful gifts Following a year at George Brown College where she graduated as a dental nurse Kelly has been working in the dental of fice of Brian Markham and Hurst of Georgetown She is planning to take a dental hygiene course m the future Keliy Is the daughter of Bert and Hazel Stewart of RRl Hornby Brit ton had to do to relive a part of Canada s history was paddle 2 200 miles to the Arctic The Lakehead University stu dent was one of 25 Lakehead students who recently returned from a canoe trip retracing the route followed by Canadian ex plorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie in his quest to travel from sea o sea The twomonth journey was co- sponsored by Umversi ty One Step Beyond and the Alex Mackenzie Trail Association to commemorate the an of the first recorded crossing of Canada from the Allan tic to the Pacific Oceans Before embarking on the voyage in late May Mr said he wanted to participate the trip to recognize a great Canadian hero who exemplifies the true meaning of entrepreneurship and bravery Upon his return July 30 he these sentiments saying he was proud to have lived up to the challenge I set a goal and stop ped at nothing to reach it Mr Bntton 25 dressed in clothes representative of Sir Alex ander Mackenzies time set out from Fort McMurray and paddled the Athabasca Rtver to Lake Athabasca They then travelled along the Slave River to Great Slave Lake crossing it to reach Yellowkmfe From there they travelled to the mouth of the Mackenzie River then north to The group paddled 100 plus days usually more than hours a day It was daylight approximately hours out of every 24 Mr Bntton said It was a great way to see and feel the country Along the way the group stopped in several communities and put on dramas of Sir Alexander Macken s life and the fur trade The dramas allowed the group to bndge the gap between many communities proving that people from the Caucasian sector of Canada can interact with Canadas native population We taught them a little about our culture and they learned a little about ours Sightings of different wildlife was also a highlight of the trip Mr Bntton said The explorers saw moose bald eagles bear falcons and foxes Luckily problems were few and far between They expected to be icebound a few days while in Yellowknife but they were only stranded for one day Mr said The icebergs floating in Yellowknife Bay is something Mr Bntton wont easily forget It was quite a sight The food however was one of the least gratifying parts of the Their food was stored in olive barrels and it consisted mainly of canned meats cold beans cheese crackers and canned puddings Everyone was amazed at how well they got along with each other said Mr They got along well because they had a com mon goal and realized it would never be achieved if they spent their time bickering he said Mr Bntton would definitely repeat the tnp or go on a similar trip saying It was a unique ex penence I feel I am a better Cana dian because of it Mr Bntton is his third year at Lakehead University in September where he will be conti nuing his studies
