Saturday September2 Page IS Sports COLIN Herald Sports Editor Outdoor outing test of stamina By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor To imply that last week was somewhat would be akin to suggesting that Pete Rose only at tends the occasional Bingo game Because of prior commitments had asked the Herald Publisher Dave for a flexible week It turned out to be so flexible that not even Twiggy in her thin days would have been able to wend her way through the schedule But I survived barely A cottage had been rented in the Arm of Lake near Sudbury and 1 was looking for ward to waking up to the sounds of birds singing as opposed to sounds of birds coughing as tiny tend to do in Southern Ontario The site chosen for the cottage rental was Lodge near and in all honesty I don think I have ever been so pressed by a resort type operation as the one run by owner Vic Gudrunas and his General Manager daughter The cottages are spotless and even carpeted The fridges and stoves would be welcomed in any home and wonder of wonders beware of the hot water taps The water was not just hot it flowed in abundance In addition for the meek and mild the cottages were electrically heated Aside from the outdoor wonders Samoset Lodge offered a tennis court an indoor pool with a Jacuzzi and a sauna The Lodge itsilf sported a fireplace a pool table and mofe than enough down home friendliness than might be ex pected in such surroundings I didn t get much time to explore the amenities of Samoset Lodge because as stated previously it wasaheCticweek I drove up on Saturday returned to Georgetown on Monday almost dunked him in the drink I didn t tune a fishing rod or tackle but by scrounging thanks to Mr Ian Farrar 1 came up with some semblance of fisherman s gear To Ian s credit he loaned me the stuff One word of advice though Ian Don t go back to New foundland with this gear or you will be hit upside your head with a ran cid codfish Jason viewed my collection of fishing accoutrements with a mix ture of disbelief and disdain He of course had his own lightweight rod and tacklebox What did you expect I asked Red Fisher No he replied But I didn expect Motley Crue either Georgetown Haiders opened their threeday rookielryout camp Monday at Gordon Memorial Watch out Moby Dick After reestablishing the proper father son relationship set out on the boat with Jason serving the water as the trolling lure No luck We anchored about feet from shore in a likely looking spot and waited and waited and waited Jason caught about feet fishing line and I caught an anchor Having tasted success we decid ed to test other waters There was an old Evinrude motor on the boat we rented and unthinkingly I cranked it up before making sure the gear was in neutral t The motor caught at about half throttle I
