this province of course dictated by the weather Other summer sports are in the same situation and so we are not alone I notice that in spite of school return teams are still short of players at game time both in youth and senior In the seniors over many players are already off to college and university and their season is so much shorter than others I keep thinking we should con sider holding the playoffs in mid- season as teams often progress due shortages The offshoot of this is that in players are often off on vacation and the team list could well be depleted at that time also Enough philosophy for now It is amazing what happens at playoff time Teams languishing around the foot of league tables often turn matters around and this seasons Villa from Acton Mariners from Georgetown and Milton have done just that in their own way Villa have won both their games in their section to date and have seen off Meteor and the leagues number one and two teams Scores of and 31 are pretty results Last week Villa demolished a and played some good stuff in so doing Mariners now relatively injury- free are playing good entertaining soccer with flair and sometime risky defence The team has also won its first two playoff matches in beating Marlm and last week Eagles Mariners finished in last place in league play with one win in fifteen games and Villa were one spot ahead with a ten point ad vantage The game- at was a good one with the result just about correct Mariners had most of the and a late goal settled the issue for a change in Mariners favor Meanwhile the other lowly team Milton in the second divi sion rang up a victory over the young Stingers in the first week of lie playoffs having I heir earlier clashes with the Georgetown squad They were unable to sustain momentum and lost to Tain OShauter last week Wednesday had Meteor vs Mariners at and United Ajax at both late kickoffs Villa travel to Crown and Eagles to Marlin Other second division lineups are Stingers at Tarns and Milton hosting Trexcon at Brian Best The league has had an in teresting proposal put forward for thought and possible introduction next year Play all playoff games under lights This would require the support of all teams The girls bantams put up a spirited display against Oakville the past week before losing in the end From what I saw the team played well in teamwork support and endeavor The girls should have been given the lead when the visiting goalie lost concentration on a speculative long shot and allowed the ball to drop behind her and the bait ac tually crossed the line The referee took no action although the linesman indicated that a goal had been scored and the official was in no position to judge one way or the other At the provincial Ontario cup finals the presentations made by players from Hamilton Steelcrs It shows that even professional players can take time off to put something back into the game many having themselves taken part in the premier competition at this last stage Steelcrs took a two goal lead in the crucial match with Blizzard on ly to give it up and settle for a tie The result leaves Blizzard in the lead in the East division by a solitary point over rivals Steelcrs The 12yearold boys final bet ween Wexford and Streetsville threw up a few players of excep tional skills and vision But for their size and weight several players could well show the seniors a thing or two about playing pure soccer The losing coach unfortunately chose the very public selling to put his players down even although they tried and were beaten on the day by a better team Not the best way in which to encourage young players As someone said at the time Those kids will remember per rent of the good things said they member 100 per cent of all he bad The coachs per formance was by far much worse the players Rolling balls highlighted Every day beginning in September the Rolling Balls will be performing at Georgetown Bowl Participants in this
