final and fitting conclusion Sunday at the with Shady Dirty Shirts to lay claim to the leagues playoff cham pionship crown A script writer could not have penned a better scenario given the circumstances The threeday playoff tourna ment featuring all league teams was plagued Friday and Saturday by rain Friendly rivalries abounded and none more so than that featuring Dirty Shirts andShady Ladies Dirty Shirts finished on top of the leagues regular season standings while Shady Ladles had to settle for second place However Shady Ladies gained a certain amount of bragging rights by claiming the Consolation Cham pionship in the leagues Annual Invitational Tournament staged Aug 11 through the 13th As luck would have it the skies cleared Sunday afternoon and soft- ball rather than unfavorable con ditions allowed the players the op portunity to decide the issue Through five innings there was little to choose between either side and the score accurately reflected the fierceness of the bat tle The early innings had their moments of drama however Shady Ladies were in front 20 after the first inning and the teams spirits were high Then what appeared to be disaster struck Team stalwart and firststring pitcher Ev Metier was nailed in the pitching hand by a line drive in the bottom of the second inning Ev went down clutching the hand as teammates and players from Dirty Shirts converged on the pit ching mound in genuine concern for her wellbeing eventually finished the inning but relinquished mound duties the third because of the injury Players and spectators alike voiced opinions ranging from slim to none in terms of the Shadv Ladies chances if the sturdy Metier was declared hors com bat basically unable to play Dirty Shirts took advantage of this unfortunate circumstance to move in front 85 after three full innings of play Metier returned to action in the fourth inning despite a bruised and obviously painful right hand and this proved to he the rallying point for the Shady Ladies Shady Ladies edged ahead after six full innings and for both teams the season came down to six outs Surprisingly Shady Ladies were meekly retired 123 in the top of the seventh Crunch time was at hand and once again Ev Metier took mat ters in hand injured hand in this case Metier enticed the first two Dirty Shirts batters to bow out on infield flys Two out no sweat Not to be denied Dirty Shirts rallied to score one run and had the tying run on first base as tension mounted not to mention the Dirty Shirts players mounting the wire 1 1 CM LADIES Georgetown idles game was no less exciting as Blue Lite edged Red Sox 1211 Not too many details were made available from this game but from all reports it was another case where one team has to come out on top when GIBSON Herald Sports Editor Georgetown Raiders coach Peter Sturgeon is the unflappable sort He prefers keeping things on an even keel rather than engaging in the roller coaster emotional ride that can oc cur by hitting too many peaks and plumbing too many valley depths He believes in his coaching philosophy his system and feels that if his players work within themselves and his system even tually success has to follow For the most part the Raiders adhered to their coachs wishes in two exhibition games over the weekend and head into the final week of preseason play sporting a 31 record The Raiders upended Milton Merchants 64 Friday night in Milton and proved to be less than gracious hosts Saturday evening at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena dropping the Milton crew 53 before hometown fans Both games were chippy affairs highlighted more by penalty box parades than smooth skilful hockey Sturgeon in his way feels his team can play whatever type of hockey is required with the bot tom line being winning After Saturday nights game Sturgeon felt that preparations for the upcoming 198990 Central On tario Junior Hockey League season were right or schedule Our program is working well he said tough hockey team that comes to play every night With the program weve im plemented if its followed we should be able to move into the leagues higher ranks Our goal is to be Number One But well take it one shift one game one win at a time The capturing of the Sutherland Cup symbolic of Junior supremacy is Sturgeons ultimate goal He makes no bones about his aspirations but obviously more fine tuning is needed with the Raiders Friday nights game in Milton was tight through the first period and penaltyfilled The score was tied 22 as Kevin Dance and Doucette scored for the Raiders with Jeff Daw and Colin Grieves replying for Milton The Raiders Kevin Brown and Miltons Ken Guilford went at each other and both were ejected Georgetown opened up a lead on goals by Ken Kosriwka and Darren Lang then matched Miltons twogoal third period outburst to seal the win The Raiders Jay Jasper and Miltons Chad Hailday were both given the heaveho in the third period Overall the game saw minors eight major penalties and two game misconducts handed out Sean Healy scored both third period Milton goals friendly confines of Gordon Memorial Arenas Saturday I nights didUUle to Milton fortunes as the Raiders led after two periods then coasted to thesolid53win Familiarity bred an equal amount of contempt between the two teams again in the Saturday game that saw 28 minors five ma jors and four game misconducts Kevin Dance and Bill McDonald were ushered off the ice for the Raiders with Miltons Darren Bain and Pat Hanniberry also shown the gate Chris Lee scored a pair of goals for the Raiders with singles going to Brent Jason Stewart and Jim English Kelly Foster col- lected three assists For Milton Mike Dunphy Sean Healey and Colin Grieves were the marksmen This week will be devoted to par ing
