losses Acton team stands tall against Siskens By COLIN GIBSON Herald Editor Acton Sabres took two tough losses on the weekend in pre season exhibition games against twotime and defending Georgian Bay Junior C Hockey League champion Stayner Siskens but the defeats weigh too heavily on Sabres coach Ken Steen mind We re heading in the right direction said Steen In terms of ability and talent 1 don t think there was too much to choose bet ween the two teams despite the losses Stayner downed the Sabres Friday night at Gordon Memorial Arena then put the whammy on the Acton crew by skating to a win over the Sabres Saturday night in Coll mgwood Despite the twin losses Sabre mentor Steen was not down on his team It was our first exhibition games and they were a bit scrambly The team seemed a bit too tight But compared to last year I feel we have more quality and depth on the team and we 11 do alright once the regular season gets going and our roster is more settled Sabres are in the training camp phase and find things a bit tough tn terms of a stable roster when final positions could be determined by cuts made by their affiliate Georgetown Pontiac Raiders Ever the optimist though Steen feels that once regular season Mid Ontario Junior C action gets under way the Sabres will definitely be competitive A second period surge by Stayner in the Friday night game at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena proved to be the Sabres undoing The game was knotted after 20 minutes of play but Stayner Acton in the second stanza to move into a comfortable lead after two periods The penalty marred third period scuttled any comeback hopes the Sabres might have entertained as Stayner potted two markers with but a single reply from Acton to chalk up the 11 7 win Jeff Shevalier had an impressive outing for the Sabres scoring twice and adding two assists Smooth skating Bob from Hearst also counted two goals and two assists Single Sabre goals came from Vince Rogers Adam Hilts and Rich Bond For Stayner team captain Jason Arnott counted a hat tnck Ray Allan and Paul Gurnhill each scored a pair with singles going to Shawn Lou Pat Armstrong and Dan Hartnett Sabres picked up 22 minor penalties to 14 for Stayner Wayne Rivers for the Sabres was turfed from the game as was Mark Underwood of Stayner Saturday night in Collingwood the Sabres played a more disciplin game but fell behind earlv and never really did get back into the game Stayner led 10 after one penod enjoyed a 32 twoperiod lead then popped a third period goal to claim the win Mark Gardonio and Jason Lucas Landlubbers Olympics offered
