THE OUTLOOK 1985 Pagel7 Book review Books reminds us that war killed thousands of men By STEPHEN J Marching to Armageddon the first book in this twopart has been on the national best seller lists for months now and deservedly so A Nation Forged in Fire Canada and the Second World War 19391945 should follow the same path Once again a collaboration by two of the country best known historians J and Desmond Morton it is just as evocatively written as its predecessor and the illustrations both photographs and war art are equally well chosen and ed When you look at the book Lester and 287 pages pay close attention to the photographs particularly those on pages 90 and Sometimes we need reminding that young men fight wars and that men die b the thousands in Professional historians scoff at books like this made for the mass market and designed to sell One reason I am sure is that they are jealous of the money that can be made often for little or no effort at original ar chival research Criticism based on jealousy alone is unfair So is any carping at the authors heavy reliance on secondary sources if as is the case here they have gathered together a broad range of materials and done a good and thoughtful job of choosing what should go into a book of limited length and broad appeal This selection process 15 the real test of and the real difficulty in popular history It is too easy when faced with the need to V Clothing Mens Childn RATIONS HYUNDAI OWNERS For Service Call 8731818 produce a condensed and en thusiastic account to choose the dramatic incident over what is historically important and curate but may be dull and it is too easy if deadlines are advanc ing to select the most accessible source even if this means perpetuating errors made by others It is in short very easy to get things wrong The history of Canadians in the Second World War presents par problems in this regard For all the horror of the trenches the First World War at least allows us to focus on Canada s evolution as a nation on the maturation of the Canadian Corps as an effective fighting force and on the per formance of Sir Arthur pro bably Canada s best general Nothing is so neat about the World War All three services played important roles in the con but all three did so all over the world and their command structure and organization were less tangibly Canadian than that of the First War s Corps The Cana dian army was split up fighting in Hong Kong and northwest Europe before being brought together in the last two months of the war and Gen Henry Crerar s First Canadian Army at times contained at least as many British and Polish troops as Canadian The Royal Canadian Navy which became an important na tional institution in this war even controlled a significant part of the Battle of the Atlantic but ships were also serving in the Channel the Mediterranean and the Pacific usually as small bits of commands And while the Royal Canadian Air Force hdve maintained squadrons overseas and another 20odd at home the former alwas comprised some British Australian and New Zealand air and ground crew while thousands of graduates of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan served in RAF squadrons In this connection the authors are in er ror when they say that the air crew of No Bomber Squadron were entirelv Canadian when it was formed in June men from other tries were included 1 How this came about how the autonomy militarv and political Canada won the First World War paid so few dividends in the second is another they fitted in as well as one on Canada s entry into both the modern industrial age and the era of modern social pro grams between and There Is lots of room to get things wrong here errors of omission as well as commission but happily there is not much wrong in A Na Forged in Fire and almost nothing wrong of an importance It is a good way to discover what happened beginning 50 years ago this month Dr Stephen Harris Is an historian with the I am amused at how fast our bodies object to that change in temperature and how all of a sudden buyers are now look ing for things like fireplaces instead of pools high efficiency furnaces instead of central air and other energy saving features like good win and extra insulation How fickle we are In the summer the most asked question of a home was is it centrally air conditioned At the moment it seems like a sill question to ask when we are more con about being warm So now just after I have written my ads for this week I think 1 will change a few things to include the energy features of a home instead of the cooling off features that I have been advertising the past several months It might be of value to you if you are putting vdur home on the market shorth to make a list of these features for sales rep to have on hand Have readv heating bills for one and if you havt added some energ features latelv perhaps have com vein to show the difference improvements have made Most buvers are interested in the cost of running a home we often have to go back to our vendors ask for these figures so if we have them up front it will save time and it is nice to have that m formation at our fingertips If have not thought of doing upgrading this fall mavbe you should give it some consideration Even the smallesl energy saving features can be of value to you from a cost standpoint and it will add value to your home for to come not to mention your comfort zone The more we have the more information we can pass along to prospective purchasers so help us out and give everyone a break It
