Too ill vounci D a PMMflMCV ITD Downtown Georgetown 877 Public school crosscountry On Thursday afternoon schools from Milton Georgetown and Ac ton participated in the first cross country meet of the year at Cedar vale Park The meet was blessed with great weather and there were numerous bodies about 500 students some getting their initiation to cross country The meet got off to a fine start as Royal Canadian Legion Br Georgetown sponsored the meet This allowed the conveners to pur chase many more trophies to reward the runners for their ef forts First second and third run received trophies fourth fifth and sixth received medais 10 got ribbons The age groups were 8 and under 9 10 11 12 and 13 and over A special thanks to mr Cosgrove and Mr Murphy course conveners Mr Elliott and Mrs Carrutbers for running the scorers table For the staff and students of all the schools who participated All public and seperate schools were invited To the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 120 Georgetown COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor National Hockey League onice officials will honor the memory of former NHL Director of Of ficiating John McCauley by wear ing a crest bearing his initials on their jerseys this year The decision to honor McCauley was made at an NHL meeting last week The crest will be black and orange in color with orange letters and piping bearing the initials J McC It will be worn on the sleeve of the officials jerseys two Inches below the shoulder line McCauley a Georgetown dent died last June from com plications following gall bladder surgery He was survived by his wife Irene and children Wesley Bridget and Blaine was succeeded in the position of NHL Director of Of by another Georgetown resident BryanLewis Upon accepting the position Lewis stated I consider myself very fortunate to have worked both with and for John McCauley The experience will definitely aid the transition into my new officiating position highly respected and liked by people from all walks of life including his National Hockey brethren took his con siderable success in stride An NHL press release was Issued by league president John Ziegler at the time of s death We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the passing of John McCauley said To at of us in the game management and players he was a dear friend As an on ice official be was one of the best in the business As Direc tor of Officiating he was ding He was justly proud of his ac complishments in the National Hockey League and earned the respect and friendship of many both in and outside the game A native of Brampton Mc Cauley s officiating career spann ed over 20 years beginning with stints in the American Western and Central leagues starting in 1967 He joined the NHL as a referee In 1970 where be served for 10 years and worked a total of games He served as President of the NHL Officials Association for six years An eye injury suffered in an off Ice altercation forced to retire from He was named Director of
