Page THE HERALD Wednesday October 1989 AVAILABLE COPY Raiders doubled by Oakville By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sport Editor Georgetown Buick Raiders dropped their second straight Central Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season game to the Oakville Blades Saturday night at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena and a disappointed but not disheartened Peter Sturgeon has decided to go back to the basics The Raiders dropped their seasonopener 84 StreetsvlUe Derbys and despite Saturday nights loss the Raider coach can see some light at the end of the tun nel and its not necessarily a train I saw an improvement in play tonight over the Streetsvllle game Sturgeon said but not everyone came to play tonight Some guys will have to be hungrier if they want to play on this team We have young guys on the team that area t used to the kind of intensity you need to win in this league noted Sturgeon We have got to improve both our mental and physical toughness and get back to the basics Although two losses to open regular season play are hard to take Sturgeon pointed out that the Raiders dldn exactly fire out of the starting blocks last year either The team sported a woeful record after six games last year then ran off a ninegame unbeaten streak to bounce back into the hunt for league laurels Raider players can expect con tact positional play puck move and conditioning drills this week in for a pair of games this v The Raiders and Blades clashed twice in pre season exhibition games with Georgetown claiming an home ice win then dropping a decision in Oakville The teams were by no means strangers to each other in other words The problem Saturday night at Gordon Memorial Arena was that the Blades took ad vantage of their knowledge of the Raiders to work on the home team s weaknesses while the Raiders seemed content to just plug away with no game plan dent Oakville led 2 after the first and 5 3 after minutes of play The difference in the game to this point was that the Blades were able to hem the Raiders in their own end and wait for the Raiders to make mistakes which they did Raider forwards waiting for breakouts too many times forget where their man was and Oakville at times was allowed to swarm through the Georgetown zone Curtis Green who played the whole game in the Raider nets fac ed 15 shots in the second period alone and allowed three goals The Raiders managed just 10 shots on goal in the second Despite the twogoal twoperiod disadvantage the Raiders carried the play for the bulk of the third period buy couldn finish off scor chances With just over seven minutes left in the game Oakville took the steam out of the Raiders on a power play goal by Shawn Ingham The final nail in the coffin was the result of another Raider mistake Oakville enjoyed a man ad vantage situation and Fother was parked at the side of the Raider net where he corralled an errant clearing pass to put the game out of reach Raider mentor Sturgeon wasnt totally down on his team and felt that Kevin Dance with four Jason Stewart and Rob gave good accountings of themselves Sturgeon also hinted however that this weekend play might mark the make or break point for a number of players An airlift openly sug but roster changes definite ly seem to be in the offing Raider goaltender Gren faced 34 shots but have to shoulder all the blame for Oakville s six goals All too often Oakville players were allowed to set up house by the Georgetown crease where they pounced on rebounds that should have been swatted away by an alert defence Jim English Kevin Burrows and Brent scored for the Raiders and as mentioned Kevin Dance notched three assists tor Oakville Peter Romeo mat ched Shawn s pair with singles going to John Dude Darren Hunter Raiders fired 29 shots at Oakville netminderClen William Raiders took 21 penalties in eluding a major Ke in Dance took 11 penalties in eluding a major to Morgan Morgan also received a game misconduct Raiders pay return visit to then host Milton Merchants Saturday night 7 at Gordon Memorial Arena The night contest against Milton should prove in teresting for hometown fans as the Raiders dropped Milton twice in preseason exhibition games by
