very long time which is something I m learning with a vengeance Last for example there was the appointment of a new Governor General the long awaited announcement on VIA rail s future more controversy over the Goods and Services Tax and then ali the things which hap pened around the committee room table That all party House of Com mons committee which I chair has finalized plans to probe Canada Post with likely emphasis on two areas The quality and future of rural service and the potential sale of the post office Those in favor ok privatizing Canada Post argue it would be more efficient as a private cor operating like Air Canada does now a competitive environment and being responsi ble to its shareholders They also point out that selling off th opera could give the feds a lot of money cash for the deficit which could maybe stall future tax hikes The critics and there are lots of them argue that the post office never meant to make money that postal rates will soar and vice fall if the corporation ends up in the private sector The debate will likely be intense and I know il will be interesting when we begin hearings Oct 24 Ottawa Later this year I II be the committee on a cross Canada series of meetings travelling to regional centres to hear what Canadians want the future of Canada Post to be Well on to those VIA cuts The House of Commons chamber echoed over the past few days as the opposition attacked and the government defended The feds are going to sack about half of the rail service and that s gone down badly with people who feel their communities will be affected Why did the government do this Isn t the train a national symbol in this country Believe me talking to Transport Minister Benoit Bouchard in the days leading up to the announce ment you could sense the strain he was under The decision was not taken lightly Governing like this taking something away when politicians normally just dish money out is tough But there wasn t much of a choice In the Town Hall meetings across the riding this past summer people told me over and over again that the government has to cut its spending Cutting spending means doing things like saving billion over the next five years on VIA rail Us ed by just three per cent of the population the rail service this year will suck off 640 million in tax dollars Every time somebody gets on a train it costs taxpayers between and subsidies And let s get this straight What happened to VIA is just the start Ottawa laces a shortfall of billion a year Obviously thi government can I rely on higher taxes to close the gap thai message comes through loud and clear so that means spending has to plunge I have a meeting this week with Mike Wilson and the deputy prime minister to help identify other areas where we can save money and my list is already a long one I m convinced most Canadians would put up with less govern ment fewer services and reduced handouts if they could be assured taxes would be fair and the deficit trashed As always I open to sugges If you d like to be part of this process then please drop me a line with your hit list for government spending cuts Finally we have the next meeting of the Halton Peel En vironment Committee this Friday and looking forward to a good session This is a terrific bunch of people volunteers who have come forward to work on projects for the good of us all It s an honor to work with them and I extend an open in vitation to anyone whod like to get involved The get together takes place in our renovated environmentally fnendly office at Main Street South in
