have finally had it up to my left nostril with our supposedly esteemed federal leader Baffle Baloney and his band of Merry Mediocn ties As a sports writer I attempt to stay out of the field of political commentary for fear of drowning in the quagmire of brown stuff that usually is spoused by our duly elected representatives Similarly having studied political science at university I long ago gave up attempting to get an accurate translation of the doublespeak that all too often passes for political rhetoric Myion through his petty foil Michael Wilson keeps insisting on attempting to foist the insidious General Sales Tax on an increasingly reluctant and increas ingly rebellious Canadian public The critics of the GST deserve kudos for their opposition to this hidden tax but apparently the cries of foul simply fall on the deaf ears of the Jaw That Walks Like a Man Myron and his lovely spouse Millions might better be advised to pay heed to the opposition lest he be forced to face a caucus rebellion of the type that ousted another Regressive Conservative leader John Amateur sports throughout Canada will suffer because of the GST and this in turn will only end up costing the taxpayer even more money because of the trickle down effect The nine per cent tax will apply to sports registration fees for youngsters as well as facility ren tal fees Community arenas and communityrun sports fields operate in the red as it is because of the demand for their use and their upkeep costs Amateur sports organizations are trying to keep registration fees Black Machines power to win Souped up and raring to go Georgetown met Ching in Ching As usual coaches Markham Mc Cloud and Kraus were eager to testdrive the plays they have been working on with the boys Stretch Chris Hall was in net for Georgetown and lived up to his name when he slid across the net giving that little extra stretch to stop the puck Ace and Maddill and Daring Dave Markham- did some fancy road tricks and were robbed on a number of occasions Bird Richardson flew with the puck passing off to Speedster Robert more than once to test the Ching goalie Mighty Mike Kraus was right there digging along the boards and getting the puck out to his team mates Tiger Jeff Telford and Grizzly Jeff Bahr fired rubber from the blueline to just miss Jeff Telford made a nice end to end rush to apply pressure on the Ching goalie Eager Beaver Ryan had lots of defensively as well as back checking With 17 seconds left on the clock and 22 shots on net for the Black Machines and seven for Ching the score was 0 Moose Joey Goodhew put the pedal down and made one of his end to end rushes EAGLE ENTERPRISES pay off when he passed off in Ching territory to Speedster McCloud who fired one at Ching net and Mini Model Dan flipped the puck in over Chmgs goalies shoulder to win the game Bird Richard son was also in on the goalmouth scramble Coach Brian could be seen jumping on the bench when his Black Machines came through in a tough battle Joey Barber cheered teammate Chris Hall on in net These slant 6s should be ready for the OrangevJle tournament in November with the new plays and teamwork the coaches are working on S Thanks Dave for wearing our colors and Patty you can open your eyes Chris has the puck Autohaus Georgetown Inc 99 Guelph Street Georgetown Ont L7G4AB PAINT BODY SHOP AN Make Leasing All likely mean a dropoff in participants This in turn will mean that the amateur groups will be forced to ask community governments for a break in facility rental fees which naturally will be granted and pass ed on to the taxpayer at the local level Parents will sirjaply not be able to afford to have their youngsters involved in sports and who can really blame them Parents with youngsters in sports pay registration fees pay for equipment pay for use of facilities on occasion and then have the added cost of transporting their kids to the various sporting venues The well is not bottomless Sports participation especially earned through life encourages the proper care of ones body and consequently better health Governments at both the provin cial and federal level are scream ing about mounting health costs so I wish one of the powers thatbe would explain to me how im plementing the GST which will in discourage athletic par ticipation makes even a modicum of sense health wise Good old Baffle if I can be so informal expresses deep concern about the problems of drugs and youth Take a walk outside Prime Minister and ask a youngster why he or she takes drugs Chances are the majority of the replies of fered will be Ive nothng better to do Sports gives youngsters something to do provides self expression and allows for the building up of selfconfidence so important in surviving in this day and age To top things off Old an nounced this past week that million of Canadian taxpayers money will be sent immediately to Poland and Hungary I thought the original concept of the GST was to get our economy back on an even keel and put muchneeded funds into the government coffers Where did the money for Poland and Hungary come from Before attempting to alleviate the worlds problems Mr Pyime Minister address your own and get your act together before its too late not only for you but for Canada For once in your political life make a decision Leave As I see it anyway Campbell House Gallery long as it doesnt cave in The Georgetown Raiders just might be advised to shoreup that cellar roof following a pair of frustrating losses to Burl Cougars in Central Ontario Junior Hockey League games played on the weekend Raiders entered weekend action on the bright side after notching their first league win of the young 198990 season the previous Tues day 107 over Peterborough Junior Petes in Peterborough The win might have provided a glimmer of hope for the Georgetown following four straight setbacks to start the regular season Unfortunately for the Raiders the Cougars sit on top of the Cen Ontario Junior Hockey Leagues Western Division stan dings tied with Milton and ap peared in no mood to offer sym pathy of any sort to the Georgetown team Fnday night in Burlington the Cougars posted a comfortable 7 2 win and Saturday night before Raider supporters at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena the Cougars proved to be double- trouble by claiming a relatively easy 81 triumph The twin losses leave the Raiders just one point out of the basement in the leagues Western Division with Brampton trailing the pack To the Raiders credit the team made a game of it through two periods on night Burlington led after the first period and after 40 minutes of play The third frame proved to be the Raiders undoing however as Burlington held the Raiders off the while scoring three times to claim the win Bill McDonald had a goal and an assist for the Raiders in the night clash with Steve the second Raider goal Kelly Foster and Jason Stewart each picked up assists Saturday night at Gordon Meraonal Arena the Raiders were never really in the game Burlington romped to a first- period lead waltzed ahead after two frames then eased off in the third period to match Georgetowns single goal to run the final count to 81 in the visitors favor Jim English with assists to Cur Lee and Steve Dubarry counted the lone Georgetown marker Former Georgetown minor hockey product Andy Pearce showed well against his former hockey brethren Ever optimistic Raider coach Peter Sturgeon feels his teams fortune can only improve We regroup stated Sturgeon following the pair of losses I feel we will make progress and we will improve Sturgeon felt the Raiders collec tively gave a good account of themselves night but suf fered a letdown and just came up flat on Saturday A young hockey team will have its ups and downs offered Sturgeon Its to be expected Well be working on team attitude and stressing the work ethic this week Sturgeon is disappointed in the play of several Junior veterans but as is his style wont single out individual players Raiders have two games scheduled this week and it doesnt appear that their fortunes will im prove against the scheduled op position Raiders have an 8 m game scheduled for Friday evening against codivision leader Milton in Milton then play host to always- tough Oakville Blades Saturday night 7 30 p at Gordon Memorial Arena In earlier regular season en
