for that telltale tap tap tap of a walleye I looked back at Pappy as he quietly skillfully landed yet another beautiful fish a keeper for his now stringer I studied the man his receding white hair his lean welltanned face that goldentooth smile and of course the everpresent cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth the ash growing longer and longer and yet he always managed to tap it off before it fell it was amazing Pappy gently lowered the str inger of walleye back into the water Boy we were going to eat well tomorrow but I wanted to contribute I wanted to catch at least one I was worried that if i didnt well maybe Pappy wouldnt want me to fish with him again Har you ungry Pappy ask ed with that delightful French- Canadian accent After all wed been out on the lake for about eight hours No I answered soft- Several minutes passed Cold Pappy inquired and I shook my head in the negative Several more minutes Ave to use de pot to which we both laughed quietly Pappy in his typical delayed reaction style Finally Well Leonard hits time to go We ave some nice fish ere and we packed up our gear and I guess my seven year old face betrayed my disappointment Sure we had fish all of them Pappys I had been shut out Well it didnt take long for Pappy to guide our boat back to that friendly old dock in front of our cot tage and this was going to be lessontime for yours truly A small crowd of people had gathered around the dock Pappy didnt seem to take any special notice but for me this was going to be embarrassing I hadnt caught a fish My grandmother explained to Pappy that everyone had been worried ten hours out on the lake almost sending for the police little boys needing to eat and so on and so on Pappy said something to her in French and suddenly she didnt seem worried anymore Beside Pappy exclaimed look at de fish we caught Look at fish Leonard caught to which I started to object but Pappy squeezed my shoulder just hard enough to encourage me to play In ln pastime I dont think that any little boy has ever gone to bed with a wider smile on his face After all I was going fishing in the morning with my Dad and Pappy our team mate Boy we were going to catch
