Page THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday October 1989 RECREATION DEPARTMENT Leisure Lines Dropin for disabled adults From the Hills Recreation and Parks Department On June 17 1988 in response to a survey of disabled adults a com mittee formed called the Recreation Committee for Special Needs North Halton to design a dropin program for disabled adults The purpose is to provide ed adults with facilities where they cm pursue their recreational in terests increase social networks learn new skills and find op portunities that will contribute to their total sense of well being The program now operates every Wednesday at the Acton Legion and each week we try to offer various leisure and social op portunities including both new op tions and repeats of the old favorites We have attempted to promote participation in some of the follow ing activities Cards trips table games movies bingo kite flving garden ing discussions ping pong sports activities arts and crafts special events refreshments danemgs inging fitness leather work guest speakers and much much more Since our program is dropin by nature participants are free to move from station to station or just sit back and socialize We have found our participants have some wonderfully creative skills particularlv in the arts and crafts These skills will become very apparent at our first ever Special Needs Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday Oct 21 at the Acton Arena from to You will be delightfully ed at the talents of our members and jour support of our program ill be greatly appreciated If would like to donate baked or ski season These expen ditures are part of Glen Edens development plans that com menced m with the tion of a new tnple and ski run This next major phase of development involves the in stallation of a new computerized snowmaking system and a new ski run A new Bombardier BR400plus grooming vehicle is also being purchased for the up coming season These additions to Glen Eden s facilities will provide more snow more hill space and better groomed ski slopes than ever before The new snowmaking system which was designed and engineered bv Delta Engineering of Ottawa includes a new building to house the main phvsical plant two new CFM high efficiency rotary screw air compressors two new GPM vertical turbine water pumps a computerized monitoring system an on hill weather sta and pipeline extension This snowmaking system will greatly expand on our previous snowmaking capabilities allow earlier opening for skiing in December and will help guarantee good snow coverage for the Christmas Break and the rest of the ski season The new Lover s Lane ski run will open up skiing under the existing Twister Both night lighting and snowmaking are being installed on this in termediate run to permit good day and night skiing all season long The new Bombardier grooming vehicle is a state of the art version of our previous groomer which will allow us to enhance our tion for well groomed slopes Glen Eden Ski Area is owned and operated by the Halton Region Conservation Authority The new equipment and facilities are being purchased using monies drawn from the reserve funds developed through the suc cessful operation of the Ski Area Glen Eden is pro viding a good skiing experience for the public and improvements for the season are proof of that commitment Construction is well under way at the
