Hawks and high expectations t allow Bennett to concentrate fully on his primary responsibility namely to play hockey to the best of his ability Bennett has now got his priorities straight and this is reflected in his and the Wolves performance to date The Georgetown hockev s scoring points ranked him second behind Kingston Drake Berehowsky who has points in league scoring rankings for def Bennett s 10 assists matched five other players totals to lead the league in this scoring category Sudbury Wolves currently hold down second spot in the s Emms Division just behind don Knghts Further to my column of last week concerning the Goods and Services Tax incorrectly referred to b me as the General Sales Taxi which is being proposed and posed on the Canadian public by the federal government As pointed out the 9 per cent tax will drastically affect sports at the local level and could end up deny ing citizens access to and use of community run athletics As it stands the tax will apply to almost all aspects of community sports This includes arena rentals playing field rentals registration fees on and on all the way down to even skate sharpen ing costs and costs for the repairs of figure skating outfits It a fact of life that people about taxes regardless of where or to whom they apply However by the same token some benefit can usually be seen to be derived from the ubiquitous taxes so most criticism is muted Criticism levelled at the federal government concerning the GST and how it will affect community sports should not be muted but rather shouted from the rooftops It the GST is a shaft job being perpetrated government Acton Redmen bow to Milton The Acton Junior boys volleyball team travelled to Milton this past weekend to compete in the Bishop Reding Invitational Tournament Six schools from Guelph and Hafton were represented in the Junior tion The Acton squad was especially looking forward to this tournament as- they would once again face their arch nvals in the tough Halton East Division EC The two teams have a long record of close competition this season each having defeated the other for a gold medal in previous tournaments The day started off as could be predicted between the two rivals with each of them splitting vic tories in the tournament opener The Milton team took Acton in the first game while the captured the second 1512 In the remaining round robin play the split with s Pocock High School Acton winning and in a game in which the Redmen were down 134 at one time Acton split with Georgetown win 1513 and then losing 1614 The defeated St James and in their next round robin game In their last regular match the Redmen defeated Bishop Reding EAGLE ENTERPRISES and The stage was now set for the semi finals in which Acton was matched against E C Drury True to form the two teams put on an exciting and exhausting exhibition of their rivalry Acton took the first of the best of three while Drury stormed back to take the second game 154 The final deciding match was another seesaw battle that these two teams have engaged in all The lead changed hands many times and with victory almost in their hands the Redmen succumb ed in overtime to lose The two teams close out their regular Halton league season this week Coaches Ken Ellis and Dave Thorpe had to be pleased if a little frustrated at the erratic play of their charges Ellis was particular ly impressed by the consistent hard work and overall excellence of power hitter Bill Andrews in the tournament Bill played an excellent defensive game as well Ellis said coming up with a number of crucial stuffs up front As 1 See It Colin Gibson Sports Editor Rebels peaking at right time which is clutching at straws in a feeble attempt to show some semblance of leadership The Canadian Ship of State is rudderless and wandenng aimless ly in circles The per cent ripoff as it per tains to local athletics will go directly to the federal government with nothing being returned to the community level Community Recreation and Parks departments all aspects considered operate on a loss as it is and are responsible to local governments Budget needs and suggestions can be put forward but must be treated realistically in relation to the total community needs picture The Recreation and Parks Department of Halton Hills already provides services which might not be realized Groups wishing use of facilities are sometimes not charged the full rental fee simply because of their financial situation Grants are also issued An off thewall figure of can be used as an example Some organizations would pay the full others perhaps others perhaps and some might be granted free use of the facilities This figure now rises to but obviously the various financial picture remains the same The cost must be absorbed if the community is to be serviced so the possibility of higher tax levies raises its head The Halton Hills Recreation and Parks budget showed expen ditures close to a half times realized revenue Rates and operating costs rise every year but there has to be a bottom line somewhere With the per cent GST added on to rates and costs the bottom line becomes obvious More taxes or decreased services On a community level people are much more concerned it ap pears in regards where their tax money goes So the feds can hide in their paper towers collect the booty from the GST then blame local governments when people howl about rising local taxes or decreased local services This naturally is the scenario that our exalted federal leader Biff Buffoon and other members of the Regressive Conspirators party envision I hope fervently that the Cana public sees through the charade before it really is too late to do anything about As I see it anyway By COLIN GIBSON Herald
