effort Tuesday night Caledon against the Flyers but in the rugged no quarter asked or given contest the Acton squad eventually succumbed to the hometown Flyers The Sabres Paul Coverdale Steve Locke and Mark Brom mersma were tossed from the game as the Acton outfit refused to turn the other cheek and ignore cheap shots from the Flyers It s becoming increasingly ob vious that the Sabres are GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The GDHS Rebels junior girls basketball team defeated Queen Elizabeth Park High School of Oakville 3829 in a first round playoff game Wednesday in Georgetown to earn the right to advance to Halton league quarter final play The Rebels had finished fourth in regular season league play with a record in the team league All teams qualified for first round playoff berths Although GDHS had finished ahead of E Park in regular season play the Wednesday con test was by no means viewed as a walkover by the Rebels as the Oakville team had previously beaten the hometown squad The game was a tuck af fair throughout with the eventual outcome being decided in the final two minutes of the game courtesy of the Rebels Fanny Marcou Using the transition game to perfection scored three fast break baskets in the final two minutes of play to seal Oakville fate led 1614 at the half and the game was tied 22 at the threequarter mark The Rebels surged offensively in the final quarter and Marcou pro vided the final nails for the Oakville coffin appropriate on the day after Halloween Shelley Terashita paced the Rebels with points Tracey hooped eight points and Jennifer Bottomlej and Fanny each chipped in six point offensive efforts According to Rebel coach Gary Southworth This was the best game the team has played all year especially defensively The junior quarter final playoff contest is scheduled for Wednesday against an as vet to be determined opponent Oldtimers tourney takes centre stage Specks of grey will intermingle with ice chips at both the Georgetown Memorial Arena and the Gordon Memorial Arena this weekend as the fifth Annual Georgetown Hockev Heritage Coun Oldtimers Tournament takes centre stage locally Six division crowns will be competed for teams Diusional win advance to the Carling0 Keefe provincial champion ship tournament Tournament play got under way at the two arenas and tion wraps up Sunday with division finals at the Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena The Olde Hide House of Acton is Most Valuable trophies in each division while Louisville sticks will offer sticks to the player who gets the gamewinning goal in each ision The Georgetown Pontiac Buick Raiders are acting as host team and a booster club will be in operation throughout the tournament Tonight Saturday a dance is scheduled at the Gordon Alton Memonal Arena hall Flyers escaped with the narrow 54 win Team captain Peter Cargill scored twice and added an assist for the Sabres with Wayne Rivers rounding out the Acton scoring had an assist to go with his goal Dave Sutherland picked up two assists while Tim McDonald Jon Van Dam and Bob Watson picked up single assists The loss to the Flyers dropped the Sabres regular season Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League record to 3f but the team s feistiness and never say die attitude displayed in the last few games augers well for the team future fortunes The Sabres played Wednesday night in Bradford and hosted Friday evening at the Acton Community Centre At press time results from both games weren t available Sunday afternoon game time 30 p m at the Acton Community Centre hockey should be in for an entertaining fair Sabres host Orangeville Crushers and there is no love lost between the two teams The Crushers hung an embar rassing 14 3 defeat on the Sabres in Orangeville last visit to Acton but on Oct the Sabres trekked to Orangeville and served notice that times have changed The Sabres lost to the Crushers with the last Orangeville goal being scored into an empty net Dart league standings
