Herald photo POWER town prepares for recycling week POWER will join the Town of Halton Hills in ushering in recycl ing week from Nov to with a campaign to ban The town proclaimed next week recycling week and will advertise in the town local newspapers and on Halton Cable television There will be displays on recycling awareness at the Halton Hills Cultural Centre and the Hills Civic Centre and a banner will be put up on Highway near Georgetown Protect Our Water and En vironmental Resources the citizens group opposed to putting a landfill site in the Acton quarry near Limehouse will launch a campaign to stop using styrofoam in fast food restaurants Styrofoam contains chlorofluorocarbons said to destroy the earth protective ozone layer We are going to ask the students to participate in the pro gram POWER member Rita Landry said The movement will be called SAS Students Against Styrofoam Mens Wear going to try to en courage the citizens to ban for the entire week Mrs Landry said Fast food restaurants like McDonalds Restaurants will be one of the restaurants POWER will lobby They re one of the largest suppliers of Mrs dry said If McDonald s stopped using styrofoam there would be a domino effect POWER will also ask those going to the butcher to use paper packag ing for meats instead of styrofoam POWER was scheduled to make a presentation of a picture created by Glen Williams DONNA Kr- 1 I he Herald The Sunday shopping issue as yet unsettled by Region is going to become the municipal s abortion issue Halton Hills Regional Councillor Rick Bonnette Bonnette told councillors at last Wednesday s council meeting that the Sunday shopping issue cannot be settled with a yes or no vote A provincial legislation under the Retail Business Holidays Act gives municipalities the right to exempt stores allowing them to open Sunda This could be an important op portunity for us for the Region to foster tourism the Acton coun But last week at a Regional finance meeting Halton coun voted to attempt to give Sunday shopping ruling back to the province said if Halton Region waits for the province to determine the Sunday shopping issue for Ontario municipalities Halton two tourist exemption areas Bronte and the Hide House in Acton now protected until 1994 could become mutant or a side effect of provincial legisla and could be closed The Retail Business Holidays Act which goes into effect in February limits Sunday open ings of stores over 2 square feet and removes the tourist exemp tion Peel Region voted Thursday on the Sunday shopping issue Regional Chairman Frank Bean said the vote called for the status quo on Sunday shopping in Peel But Coun Bonnette said permit ted Sunday shopping in should be tourist reliant He said before Acton s tourism in grew to 350 employees five or six years ago Acton was an industrial town Regional business manager Brent Kearse told councillors that waiting to make a decision on tourist exemptions would not preclude a
