Pullen put in the winner The fifth goal was put in an empty net by Blake Inglis 15 years ago Four intrepid Georgetown boys look to the street at 8 a m the morning and played Ball Hockey continuously until the next morning to set an unofficial world record Steve Mark Brabant Rod Sparks and Steve Cropper played for 16 hours and five minutes to break a record set in Hamilton about a month ago The old record was 15 hours The group of four now plans to write to Whirter Brothers coauthors of the Guiness Book of World Records in an attempt to gain official recogni tion of their feat Instead of watching television a group of Grade 7 students at Stewarttown Public School con verted the library into a television studio to produce their own com mercials and programs Included in the programming was Kathy Christine Cleave and Eric who all introduced a new lollipop that will revolutionize the candy business The television equipment used by the students is owned by the Halton Board of Education Society Marquis owned by Terry Leslie was the first prize winner in her category two-year- old heifer at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair held in Toronto Halton History from bur files 10 years ago Eddy Kasprzyckr congratulated Joe Domingos Gerry Roberts and Bill Pires members of the Colum bian Squires on receiving a Corp d Elite Award Mr Kasprzycki presented a plaque to the trio who were presented an award earlier in November at the Squires meeting in the Holy Cross church Douglas a wellknown member of the North Scout movement has received the medal of merit for his outstanding con tribution to the movement during the past years Mr Douglas has been presented a letter telling him he has received the award but the actual medal will be presented at a later date Gail Martin was on hand to help decorate the ARC Industries open house in Hornby last week The open house is each year to show the kind of work being done in a sheltered workshop operated by the North Association for the Mentally Retarded 5 years ago Frank Giffen received a Com missioners Citation for his quick actions in the extinguishing of a fire in the dress of an girl with his bare hands OPP Con stable Giffen was on duty when the Lieutenant Governor flew to Cleveland to attend a nephews wedding Sept l The near tragedy occurred at the outside wedding reception Abbie Mae Buck Miller one of the flower girls came too near one of the candles set up in the backyard when her dress caught fire I happened to spot her he said She was about feet away I couldnt have got the dress off her in time so I put it out with my hands Commissioner Archie Ferguson wrote a letter to Con stable Giffen which read I per sonalty commend you for your timely response to an emergency situation GST puts lifes small pleasures in jeopardy Donna Kell What sort of fair system of taxation would put the small pleasures of life in jeopardy The Goods and Services Tax pro posed by the federal government instills fear in people such as Rose who owns the Georgetown Bowl with her family Mrs Radyk doesnt know if her doors will have to close once everything from the planks on the floors to the soft drinks in bowlers hands is taxed After 29 years hosting a recrea tional activity for the communitys low and middle income families the Radyks may be faced with a crisis they cant bear The tax is supposed to be broaderbased and more equitable but it seems the little guy or gal gets nailed to the wall I listened to Tory HaltonPeel Tory MP Garth Turner stand up in July and say that the middle in come earner was a sitting duck under the present tax system But its certainly better to be a sitting duck than a duck a lorange served up at some corporate dinner Because the bottom line is the Tories want to drop the magnanimous tax credits they generously allowed the lower- income earners But they opened up the bag of goodies gave us a peek and then quickly drew them away Groceries could be taxed and any remaining exemptions on such things as drugs or dental appoint ments could be subject to the tax grab that is supposed to get our country out of its deficit Everyone is always talking about the deficit how the govern ment spends too much and col lects too little tax But why take the tax gun and shoot directly at the lower and middle income earners and the consumer in the lower income bracket who certainly spends more percentagewise and his wealthier counterpart Maybe some corporate sports players can write off a golf club membership that costs thousands a year for their company and then for the people of Canada who ab sorb the exemption But you have to question a tax system that would steal a little pleasure from people who cant afford a night out bowl ing Why has the Supreme court refused to hear abortion case Dear Sir Why the refusal by the Supreme Court of Canada to hear the Joseph Burowsky case The case was slated to be heard many months in advance The Supreme Court said they refused to hear the case because there was not a law governing abortion the same Supreme Court struck down the abortion law previously Are the Supreme Court justices afraid to face the truth about the humanity of the unborn child Truths which the medical profes sion and anyone else concerned about the killing of unborn children have been aware of for many years Have prochoice members of the federal government and indeed prochoice members of the official opposition Liberals that have ap pointed these judges over the years used their positions to influence the Supreme Court justices insofar as the Supreme Court refusal to hear either side of the Burowsky case The immoral abortion law pro posal put forward by ProAbortion Justice Minister Mr Doug Lewis would allow abortion on demand plus the encouragement of countless more freestanding abor tion clinics across the land The proposed law is a in favor of the wellfinanced feminist movement Ten million a year of taxpayers money into the hands of proabortion groups Anything to garner votes and silence the squeaky wheel We recall when per cent of the electorate wanted capital punish ment legislation for firstdegree murder and yet the government ignored their wishes Now this same government wants to decree the death penalty upon countless thousands of inno cent and totally helpless unborn children over 100000 unborn Canadian children die by abortion each year in Canada at the present time The federal government wants to pass a proabortion law and yet I am sure there has never been a study done by any federal govern ment in Canada which would define when human life actually begins It is beyond comprehension how the federal government can pro pose legilsation to kill hundreds of thousands of Canadian children without first having a gathering of scientists gynecologists and ex perts in the science of fetalogy to define for them the humanity of the unborn child The American government made a study in 1979 and all renowned scientists including gynecologists and experts in fetalogy study of the fetus agreed that human life begins at the moment of conception The Mulroney government has already pressured several cabinet ministers to vote for the proposed proabortion law Mulroney wants complete solidarity from his cabinet ministers according to the news media Barbara McDougal a pro- abortion cabinet minister stated that Tell it like it is abortion is the killing of an unborn child Barbara Mcdougal tells It like it is Induced abortion is the destruc tion of human life Legalization of abortion cannot change this fact Sadly it en courages a civilization to become much less civilized and much less loving Please write Prime Minister Brian Mulroney Justice Minister Lewis Minister of Health and Welfare Mr Perrin Beatty and your MP HaltonPeel MP Mr Garth Turner The unborn children must rely on you He or she cannot protest their killing Address all letters to House of Commons Parliament Buildings Ottawa On KGB News item Representatives of the KGB recently appeared on the Soviet version of a TV talkshow in an attempt to clear up misconcep tions about the agency Rather than an instrument of state- sponsored terror they explained the KGB is actually a public- spirited organization staffed by caring and compassionate human Ahem We pause briefly as a certain wellknown theme song begins An icy Moscow wind howled as agent of Her Majestys Secret Service slipped through the back door of the Hotel Glasnost and crept up the stairs that would lead him to room 412 Bonds lips twisted in the cold smile of a man who carried the elite double0 designation he license to kill Numerous large- budget movies later it was also a license to print money But tonight was a night for kill ing not boxoffice Because upstairs in room Igor waited Bytchernosoff was the coldest killer on the KGB He had headed the execution squads of every secret service in the Eastern Bloc In the fifties he had been known as the Scourge of Stalingrad In the sixties he had been the Beast of Bulgaria and later the Peril of Poland Latterly he had turned his sights on the British Service Bond had been briefed on this by M and Bytchernosoff had shot P and garotted S and T and poisoned B X and Z shattering the Services morale and leaving it alarmingly low on consonants Bond thought grimly upon this as he drew his Walter PPK and kick ed through the door of room had been sitting in a chair by the fire Now he leaped up exclaiming in surprise and dropping his needlepoint Oh look he cried What a nice surprise Its Commander Bond may I call you James And my what a lovely suit Eyeing him icily Bond took out a cigarette a Morland Special with the three gold bands The Morland Specials were a blend of Turkish and American tobacco and had been missing from the movies ever since the antismoking types got their knickers in a knot Bytchernosoff regarded him ingly What brings you here James Im here to kill you Bond snapped Ive got a license he added So what do you think of that Kill me Bytchernosoff ex claimed Oh dear Then he hesitated and asked sensitively Would it make you happy Bonds eyes narrowed What does that have to do with it Im with the KGB Bytcher explained We care about people James May I call you Jim Its important for people to be happy In my case well going to the ballet makes me happy And bouncing grandchildren on my knee But if killing me makes you happy Bonds steely gaze wavered and he felt a sudden strong need for a vodka martini With a twist of lemon Shaken not stirred A man ly drink that bloody Roger Moore drank champagne instead of I dont want to be happy Bond scowled I hate being happy I just like shooting people and sleep ing with women with silly names like Honeychile Ryder No Jim Bytchernosoff said earnestly I dont believe that I think youre just misunderstood Deep inside you just want people Bonds lip trembled His eyes misted These were the first com passionate words he had heard since his old Scottish nanny had crooned him lullabies and called him Little JimBits Thats it Jim Bytchernosoff urged Cry Let it out Men must get in touch with their feelings Bytchernosoff smiled so radiant ly that Bond didnt notice the knife until it was already between his ribs Aarrgh he croaked stagger ing backwards But I thought and there was a newsitem just the other day that said Oh Jim said sadly Youve got to stop believ ing everything you rend in the newspapers
