French immersion will be extended into grade 9 THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday December Page The Roman Catholic Board of Education has taken steps to ensure its Grade a French immersion students don lose their French during their high school years The board recently approved ex tending its French immersion pro gram to include Grade starting September The program was introduced in to Grade students the boards superintendent for cur services Lou said will be entering Grade next September so we needed a program for them Students who graduate from the French immersion program in Grade would have no problems getting around in Montreal Mr Piovesan said At the end of Grade they the students are ingual They might have a slight English accent but they have a good working knowledge of French Miltons Bishop Reding along with the Regions three other high schools will be Extended French and Geography to the French immersion students said Mr Piovesan He said the board expects a total of 112 students to enroll in the Ex tended French course and students to enroll in the geography course These totals are based on the current Grade French im mersion students who have said they will take the courses next year said Mr Piovesan He stressed that these expected totals are sufficient so that the cor responding provincial grants will be enough to cover the cost of the courses The current French immersion students would be prevented from achieving a French Ontario Academic Credit if the French immersion program introduced into the high schools explained Mr Piovesan He said the province requires that to start an French credit in Grade 12 students need to have accumulated a minimum of 2 hours of French instruction But the French immersion Grade students will only have ac cumulated 1 920 hours by the end of this school year Mr Piovesan said The two Grade French immer sion courses will mean students will have acquired 2160 hours of French instruction by the end of Grades He said the board plans to in troduce a third French immersion course for Grade 9 students in if there is a sufficient number of students The enrolment levels will also dictate whether the French lm program will be extended to Grades and ll Were going to take it one year at a time Mr said Good neighbor campaign underway Many people look forward to Christmas dinner and the Georgetown Lioness Club are mak ing sure a lot people will not be disappointed The annual Good Neighbor Christmas Campaign is being sponsored by the Lioness Club for a second year Joyce Tilson cam paign organizer said Cash donations canned food and perishable foodstuffs to give to the poor can be brought to the St Andrews Church Dec 21 or they can be taken any one of the nearby participating schools before then Ms Tilson said Cash helps pay for the turkeys and other assorted perishables that help make up the Christmas baskets given to the poor she said One hundred and eight baskets were handed out last year Ms Tilson added
