Rebels ski team to challenge at provincials formidable crosscountry runmri By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The Georgetown District High School Rebels senior boys Nordic Ski Team is off to Sudbury this weekend with high hopes and an impressive roster of individuals to compete in the provincial in terscholastlc Nordic skiing which will be staged just off the campus of Laurentian University It is expected that upwards of teams from across Ontario will challenge in this years OFSAA championships and Rebel team coach John Moore gives his team an outside chance of finishing amongst the top teams We have the talent said Moore but it all has to come together at the right time The GDHS senior boys team competing at OFSAA includes Eran Andrechek Scott Symmes Kevin Schneider Spence and Tim Parker Bob a noted GDHS distance runner who competed for the team at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference champion ships held recently will not be company ing the team to Sudbury The Rebels won the meet ahead of Nelson High School of Burlington Earlier in the high school Nordic skiing season the Rebels took part in two meets both staged at Hard wood Hills just north of Barne Both meets attracted approx imately 500 entrants from high schools in Ontario and the Rebels acquitted themselves well In the first meet the Rebels team place because they t field the minimum number of four competitors However with a full team com plement the second time around the Rebels placed seventh overall quite an achievement The Sudbury OFSAA course for sneior boys is 2 km in length and the race will be staged this day Rebel team members boast a diverse background as they prepare for the OFSAA challenge Eran Andrechek is a first year team member hailing from Ste Mane and he placed 10th at the meet Twenty yearold Scott Symmes is a second year team member who placed at GHAC Scott is coached by Symmes and is a meirber of the Glen Rovers Nordic racing team Kevin Schneider 17 years old and in his first year of racing plat ed sixth at GHAC is coached Dave Vanestone and is a member of the Chmguacousv B racing team Tim Parker of Limehouse years old won the GHAC event He is coached Dive Vanstone and is well n as a loppet skier Parker is a member of the Chinguacousy Nordic B team won the Algonquin Tour placed third in the Tour of Hardwood and placed third in the Marsh In The Rebels senior boys Nordic ski team is anchored by Spence years old who is also a formidable crosscountry running competitor In his third year of skiing he has accumulated a number of laurels A member of the Chinguacousy Nordic A team Spence is coach ed by Dave Vanstone He placed second in his event at GHAC placed second in the Wye Marsh Invitational and ninth at the North York Invitational Spence attended the World Junior in Thunder Bay as a member of the Southern On junior ski team and was also invited to attend the Ontario Development Team Camp in Thunder Bay Spence is also a member of the Glen Rovers Nordic right time ac cording to team coach Shirleen Vella and Georgetown chances in the upcoming interscholastic pro vincial championships scheduled for the weekend of March 2 and at Etobicoke Olyropium swimming complex look promising in a number of events The Rebels competed in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Con championships last Wednesday and the results were impressive Team members entered in events and collected six firsts seven seconds thirds and had swimmers place in positions four through Knstjana Curry placed first in all three events she entered and went undefeated through Halton and CHAC championship meets She won the senior girls metre freestyle event the senior girls 100 metre freestyle event and was a member of the winning Rebel senior girls 200 metre freestyle relay Other team members in eluded Jenni Williams Jenn Ryan and Glaser The open girls medley relay event was won by the Rebel team of Stmson Cynthia Eccles Kristin Hemer and Louise Cynthia Eccles won the open girls 50 metre freestyle event and Cam Oomen won the senior boys 100 metre backstroke event Coach Vella was also pleased as 15 swimmers posted personal bests in a number of events Glen Oomen had personal bests in the backstroke leg of the open boys metre medley relay and the open boys 100 metre backstroke Julie Robertson posted personal bests in the open girls 100 metre backstroke event and the open girls 200 metre freestyle event Sara Mulholland topped her previous efforts in the senior girls metre and the senior girls metre freestyle events Steve swam to personal bests in the senior boys metre freestyle event and the senior boys 100 metre backstroke event Other personal bests were recorded by Andrew Morris in the senior boys metre freestyle event Kristin in the open girls metre butterfly event Robert Weston in the open boys metre butterfly event Glaser in the senior girls metre freestyle event Dawn Newman in the senior girls metre breaststroke event Dave Inglis in the third leg of the senior boys metre freestyle relay event and Mathew Zuraw in the open boys 100 event The improved times the Rebel school and team spirit the ad that swimmers had to make in technique changes
