PageZ4 THE HERALD Wednesday May 1990 Harrison School gets fitness award Harrison Public School became the first school in to receive an award of fitness from the Cana Association for Health Physical Education and tion and Fitness Canada says teacher Gary Southworlh Mr Southworth spearheaded the fitness campaign once he realized the award could be obtained by the school We had a pretty good program here he said but the school got together with consultants and co ordinators to strengthen the pro grams throughout all grade levels Only 19 other schools in Ontario received the award We re really proud of our school Mr Southworth said Our programs allow a student to excel at an activity or just participate in one he said There are good ly intramural and interschool ac tivites he added It s a nice award for everybody at the school Mr Southworth said The award had a 16page ap plication that needed to be filled out The application states the school must have quality daily physical education that consists of to 300 minutes of class per five day week Also to obtain the award 50 per cent of the total school population must be active in intramural ac for a minimum of 10 hours during the school year The twoyear award must also include five of the following team games gymnastics dance outdoor pursuit fitness and lifestyle aquatics and individual or dual activities Each of the five minimum sec tions must constitute at least five per cent of the instructional time The award was presented to the school s principal Bob McCaw Mr Southworth and four students at the Board of Education meeting May by Halton Hills trustee Dick Howitt Soccer scene Canada wins final By ALEX TOUGH Cathff struck twice once in each half to give Canada a 1 win over Mexico in the final of the Three Nations Cup a new addition to the inter nations competitions Cathff also scored against USA the only goal of that game to send Canada into the final Mexico ing defeated USA earlier The match v as played torrential rain in Vancouver s Swangaard Stadium Mexico played almost twothirds of the game with ten men firstly an injury and secondly an ejection for a second caution to the captain Javier Aguirre Hamilton Steelers were well represented with Mike Sweeney Jamie and Colin Miller in the squad The CSL opens with Steelers at Just as well the rain stayed away on Saturday as the youth section of the Soccer Club held opening day at Cedarvale I managed to catch the second half of the girls ban tarns and saw lots of endeavour coupled with lack of fitness at this stage of the season The club program gets under way this week with games on the few fields we have Cedarvale is not in good shape and neither is the two fields which will certainly bear the brunt of soccer The influx of new players and hopefully volunteers as he south east development gather turn may not hit us until next season The addition of fields is in urgent matter for soccer ad to consider Cobra may be lost as well as The Inter County League com this evening with games Acton and at 7 m and Cedarvale at Manners travel to Crown and Meteor have i as one learn has dropped out due to lack of players TSN has committed to this summer all year in Saturday has been shown since the fall with footie from ill over globe Fans been kepi up to date with long short tape delays and frames The will continue throughout the sum mer with the of the World Cup in June and July We north will see more than our counterparts in the south USA That s nice USA chances of doing well in the World Cup have nosedived following the losses to Mexico and Canada The States have been training and playing in Europe with mixed results However they have managed to score the odd goal or two as did Canada in their training explorations across the pond Hooliganism rears it s ugly head in countries other than England as well as England these days Belgium Holland and Germany have joined the club I am sad to relate The authorities will have their hands security forces and police full should the trend con tinue through the summer At least in the English Cup Final last Saturdav trouble was scarce if at all and exrent in Scotland for that season finale Baseball Tykes ready to go BDAVEBEAVA Herald Special The Halton Hills Trout Farm Major Tykes get the regular season under way this week with games against and Erin
