Dufferin Quarry located in the southern part of Halton Hills held an open house Wednesday at the Quarry site to answer questions concerning water and the effects of rock face blasting The open house was meant to give surrounding neighbors a chance to better understand the quarry operation said company spokesman Bnan Harrington The quarry is bordered on the east by the First Line in Hills and in the west by the Sixth Line in Milton The quarry company s hydrology consultant Douglas of Jagger Limited admitted that some of residents living in the area of the quarry have been and still are hav ing problems with their wells But Mr said results of a conducted by his company on the wells in the surrounding area show the quarry operation isn causing the well water problems Instead some of the wells are low because of the weather conditions of the last couple of years said Mr Jag Another cause for some wells be ing low said Mr Jagger is that a lot of the wells are located too close together Also attending the open house was company s blasting con sultant Gord Shaw who explained that Dufferin Aggregates is testing a new form of blasting that will reduce the noise level of a blast significantly compared to the noise levels being produced now The new system Mr Shaw is focusing on reduces noise levels as opposed to the vibration levels because in actual fact the vibra tions people say they feel from a blast actually don exist People living in homes ding the area are too far away from the blast making it physically impossible for a person nervous system to pick up the vibrations explained Mr Shaw The vibration that people perceive is actually created by the blasting noise he said The noise hits a person ear drum and it reverberates creating the effect on the body that an tual vibration would he said Another aspect of the open house was an actual blasting About people witnessed from a distance of approximately 2 feet away tonnes of rock being dislodged from the quarry face in a matter of seconds Although the Herald reporter fee anv vibrations from the blast people interviewed said they did The quarry which started opera in blasts three times a week and convert tonnes of stone into aggregate day This time last the figure was at 10 tonnes per day Mr Harrington said the company prefers the reduced production levels because the effects on the neighbors
