Sabres overtime win moves team into third By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor Acton Sabres took command of third place in the Central Ontario Jr C league with a 76 overtime victory against Bradford on Sun day at Acton Arena Previous to this week Brad ford had been third but the loss to Acton and two wins by Alliston recently set the Bulls down to fifth spot Sabres and Alliston each have points but Acton has played one less game Sabre coach Ken Steen said the win in extra time Sunday has show the teams depth which has increased as the season has worn We were leading in the se cond when Bradford scored four straight goals Instead of giving up the guys dug in and came back to win it Jeff Shevalier recently chosen as the leagues allstar game MVP got the win ner for us Steen said the main factor for the teams continued success is scoring which is third highest in the league Also helping is the teams goals allowed total of the third lowest The scoring is spread out amongst just about everybody All the lines are scoring not just one or two which makes it really tough for the opposition to shut us down Friday Adam Hilts got a hat trick followed by Jim English with two Phil Fraser with one as did Jason Lucas Dale McNiven and Mark Brommersma Hilts continued to fill the net repeating his hat trick formance Sunday while Shevalier who has been playing for the Jr B Georgetown Raiders on his of days scored two Jason Lucas and Rich Bond each scored once The two victories have now given the Sabres a record of 118 I Sabres now have a five game win- ning streak something Steen I wants to continue We play Hanover next who we just lost by one goal to back on Oct 26 and then Schomberg the team just ahead of us by five points Id like to have a record for Christmas Two more losses for Raiders By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor Georgetown Raiders lost both weekend games their first Fri day at Milton and Saturday at home 72 to Brampton leaving the team with no wins against any opponents save last place Peterborough since Nov 23 Raiders could continue that dubious streak since they travel to Peterborough Friday However coach Gary McFayden said he hopes to turn things around Dec when first place Milton visits Canadian Junior team invites Bennett to camp Former Georgetown hockey player Adam Bennett now playing hockey for the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League was selected to try out for the Canadian junior team last week Bennett was drafted by the Chicago two years ago in the first round sixth overall and is a force to be reckoned with on the Ice Sam McMaster director of operations for the Wolves said Bennett Is an integral part of their defensive unit With 12 goals and assists in 30 games his contributions to the scoresheet are also noteworthy Adam is a very fine hockey player and does an excellent job for us on defence I strongly believe he would make a great addition to the Canadian junior team Bennett was invited to the na tional junior camp last year but was one of the teams last roster cuts Having won the champion ship last year the Canadian team is defending the title at home in Saskatoon Dec 26Jan Bennett begins training at the junior camp Dec 13 in Kindersley Saskatchewan The final roster will be decided Dec We played Milton pretty close Friday going into the third period tied It was 64 with about four minutes left before they potted the others said the key to turn ing the tight games into victories was getting another sniper something general manager Joe Walsh is working on but nothing has developed Weve got three cards left to sign people us with Weve been having a lot of getting goals when were behind so if we can give other teams more pressure itll help improve things for us McFadyen said he was sure his players have been putting in the effort and was confident they could play on the same level as top ranked Milton and Brampton We have to tighten up especially late in the game With some more scor ing Im looking to catch Burl ington and Streetsville and take some games from Milton and Brampton as well The coach said even though his team lost 72 to Brampton one of his main objectives was achieved that of neutralizing their main scoring line Getting set Rebel junior volleyball player Darby sets up the ball during one of their games at Georgetown District High School during tourna ment play Saturday The Juniors didnt make it to the finals but ac counted well for themselves against the senior teams Herald photo by Robert Risk Gerry Perkins chosen as H Heritage recipient Gerry Perkins involved with local hockey since was chosen as the recipient of the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Award last Thursday He has also been a referee for just as long still taking to the ice three times a week and also completing his duties as referee-in- chief for the Georgetown Referees Association Herald photo By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor For all the people who ask nicely or not where Gerry Perkins learned to referee the answer is Georgetown After more than 30 years of donning the zebra stripes saying he doesnt know the rules is also ridiculous Though people may not agree with Perkins decisions on the ice not many doubt his dedica tion to local hockey The truth of that was shown Wednesday when he was chosen to receive the Georgetown Heritage Hockey Award by the groups selection committee Perkins started his involve ment with minor hockey in when his son Paul started playing house league Though he wasnt allowed to coach his own children Perkins stayed behind the bench as three other sons and three grandsons graduated through the minor hockey ranks His involvement with hockey didnt end as a coach That same year he started giv ing a hand to the recently created Georgetown Referees Associa tion I remember when there were just six of us in the organization Now there are 32 referees that I assign about games for every year since Im the referee- inchief for the last 25 years Its a lot of work about 20 hours a week Perkins known as Perkie has also been involved with the organization of many tour naments including the Georgetown International Ban tam Tournament Ive been in every one of them since it started 28 years ago Tournaments are a lot of fun especially some of the bigger ones like the time the Bantams went to Sweden in 1985 Perkins said the tournament was played on an outdoor rink just outside of Stockholm There was so much snow that play had to be stopped to clear the ice sur face still write to one of the guys in Sweden I refereed with Just a while ago he sent me a picture of the new arena which is right over top of where the the boys had played Though there are a lot of good times Perkins said some games have gotten ugly with the occa sional police escort required to leave the arena I dont like to remember those kinds of things That doesnt hap pen often but there is almost always somebody yelling at you from the stands As a result he tries to help referees just starting out by tell ing them to give a deaf ear pretending theyre not there know its hard sometimes and some kids have quit over it but I really enjoy the job To me hockey is the best game in the world theres nothing like it REBEL REPORT Georgetown Rebels junior and senior volleyball teams lost their first games of the season at Bishop Reding Monday Seniors won the first set 1510
