HERALD 1991 will prove a trying year Amidst all the doom and gloom forecast for our brand new year of it would be very easy to adopt the Chicken Little approach and simply proclaim The sky is falling the sky is falling In reply we suggest to all the Chicken Littles of the world buy a helmet Canada will survive the recent troubling times and no doubt emerge even stronger as a nation because of the experience Adversity ironically can be a blessing not only to in dividuals but to families and even nations This phenomenon has been recognized and recorded not only by sociologists but by psychologists as well In hard times individuals seem to find that inner strength which previously had gone untapped to not on ly persevere but to gain a new or renewed sense of selfworth which had previously been lacking Families in the same sense draw closer together when times are tough The petty squabbling among siblings is almost un consciously put aside when it is truly realized that the family unit as a whole is indeed threatened Husbands and wives who had forgotten or neglected the true meaning of love in a relationship realize the need for a partnership in the real sense of the word and strive to work together through the hard times and into the future Throughout history a nations real character and the earing of its citizens for the wellbeing and preservation of the nation has come to the fore when adversity threatens either through war or economic downturns There is no denying 1991 will be a year in which in dividuals families and nations will undergo hardship perhaps to an extent never imagined by the baby boomer generation But it could also prove to be a time of renewal in terms of faith in mankind something which appears to have been sadly lacking with our show me or give me at titude of the past number of years For those who wish to throw up their hands in despair and give up good riddance For those who wish to get on with the job that needs to be done to make our planet a better and safer place which to live and raise children and indeed survive lets roll up our sleeves join hands and get on with the task at hand Editorial- The HaKon Hills HERALD Home Letter of the week The sounds of silence Dear Editor I remember participating last year in more than one demonstration at Queens Park in which environmental groups from east and west of Toronto were complaining about the In of the Greater Toronto Area GTA by the former government No Region Ontario will easily accept Torontos garbage rather most Regions will argue that Toronto s garbage should stay Toronto Enlarging the area to include Peel and Durham may have been a way for the previous government to open new garbage dumps in these regions and maintain that tos garbage is indeed staying within the town s limits Hence the G1A was strongly opposed by the out of Town environmental groups The at the time was very supportive of the NO WAY A cries of the demonstrators MPP Ruth Greer was then ed to the institution and to the mandate of the The same MPP now Minister of the En vironment met with the regional chairmen of the GTA but not with the opposing citizens groups She recently explained to the media that the com mittee of the GTA established by the previous government is go ing to decide the location of the temporary new dumps I wonder why the citizens groups are now silent
