manager Joe Walsh was fired by the teams executive Saturday Walshs failure to produce prospects as their reason for releasing him Raider president Finn said he had no personal problems with Walsh but didnt believe the former GM was per forming his job as well as he could ha vet Hes a nice fellow and he got along very well with the ex ecutive He ran the end of things very well but he just didnt bring us the hockey players which is the GMs main function JOE WALSH Poulstmp said the players that formed this seasons team are mainly returning members from last season or those that came to at the start of the season Players weve had coming to skate with us are leads that came either from me or Dave Kentner or other members of the ex ecutive not Joe Poulstmp indicated he wasnt happy with Walshs handling of the attempted trade of Chris to Burlington the team Walsh managed for two years before switching to Georgetown in May of He traded to Burl ington for future considerations since Burlington player Andy Pierce chose not to report to Georgetown He traded a first line hockey player for nothing Hes supposed to be finding players and hes dealing them away Poulstmp said what decided the executive on removing Walsh was the absence of potential recruits at their practices during the Christmas holidays There were three very good prospects out there and Joe had a very specific task to at least get them to come in so we could have a look We expected to see at least four or five other new faces and there werent any Poulstmp sajd removing Walsh was also the executives way of letting people know how serious the organization is about putting a contender on the ice Were making a statement to the fans and players that were doing everything we can to make this a better team Our goal is to win the first round of the playoffs come hell or high water said he understood it would be more difficult for the players to dig in the comers or make the extra effort on a play if they didnt believe the manage ment was trying their best to sup port them For the remainder of the season said he will take over most aspects of the general managers job with coach Gary McPadyen handling contacts with the Ontario Hockey Association and other responsibilities Bob Hooper the previous general manager will help us out with recruiting especially in fin ding the last three import players we need said putting a new person into the position would be too disruptive at this time and wouldnt likely be naming anyone until the offseason On the attack Acton Midget player Mike Kinnon attempts to to those days in public school frantically trading their hockey cards during recess in a desperate search to collect the entire set Georgetown resident Gary Lane started out the same way eventually losing track as he grew older However about years ago he picked the hobby back up and now has every hockey set dating back to There are still a few cards here and there but Ive got most of them What Im really looking for now are some of the CFL cards from the and early 1960s With the way things are with the CFL the Cana dian card manufacturer stopped making the cards in 1968 Only a specialized company now sells them and just in complete sets People lost interest The players change so fast these days people dont get attached to certain names like they used to I get some calls from the United States asking for Warren Moon now a Houston Oiler formerly an Edmonton Eskimo cards though said Lane He doesnt stop at collecting hockey and football cards either Baseball basketball and non- sport cards top the list along with tobacco and tea cards Lane said collecting has become a multimillion dollar in dustry in the last few years especially in the United States He often travels to the S to look through some shows there Its very big with baseball be ing the biggest there compared to hockey here I can usually get a better price on Blue Jay stuff over there and sell it here at a profit since the Canadian teams popular in theStates Lane said the cards take up about onethird of his basement and it takes an effort to prepare for a show when they have to be moved My son has his own separate end in the cards He handles American baseball foot ball and basketball issues There are so many its impossible to be properly aware of all the card values Keeping track of particular values is also an industry in itself Several publications come out monthly with breakdowns on just about every sport that has had cards printed on it Even Hockey News has prices listed in it When they started do ing it you knew it was getting big Most cards appreciate in value if theyre in good shape so there must be lots of them out there Since there are still cards to be found Lane continues to search He is always interested in talking to people who may have cards to sell or are interested in starting or adding to their own collections Call him at and maybe an interesting trade or two could
