excessive use of force By LISA BOONSTOPPELPOT The Herald Regional Police say they have no problem with a new provincewide public complaints system that will add a new level of review for civilians making complaints against the police Were viewing this as a positive thing said Sergeant Carey Smith Halton Regional Polices public relations officer It provides members of the public with another avenue which wdl be an independent review of complaints His opinion was echoed by Staff Sergeant Ted Waller whos in charge of the professional stan dards bureau Regional Board of Com missioners were visited by Clare Lewis the police complaints commissioner on Thursday who discussed how the new system would be implemented The legislation was passed Dec 31 after the province decided to ex pand the program to cover all of Ontario instead of just Metropolitan Toronto where it had already been in effect Though the officers dont mind it Sergeant Smith said they didnt have a problem handling complaints before Maybe tan people are suspicious of police officers in vestigating themselves but weve never had problems here he said Previously public complaints against police were investigated by their own police force and if the complaintents werent satisfied with the investigation it would be forwarded to the Police Board of Commissioners Now police officers will still in vestigate the complaint initially but if complaintent still isnt satisfied heshe can take ad vantage of the new system which ensures an independent civilian review of police conduct Last year Halton Regional Police
