THE WEEKEND OUTLOOK Friday Seniors Natural disaster brought community together Gilbert born at Torquay Devon England Id 1891 He Uvea at Speyside On tario where he continues to write his historical articles and stories Part of To The Barn Dance This effort was triggered by a flashback in memory of an event that was caused by a freak of nature In early summer of the year 1823 a mini hurricane tore a mile wide path through a section of rural Ontario a part of the country where hurricanes were practically unknown This storm was not severe as hurricanes go There was no loss of life even among the livestock Damage to buildings was listed from slight to severe consisted of shingles to portions of the roof lifted off the whole end of a bam blown out some barns just twisted on their foundations All wooden silos empty at the time collapsed Parmer Greene suffered the most his bam was completely flattened Strangely enough the farm houses in he area were spared a few shingles off the roofs an odd window or door blown in all quickly and easily repaired Wind insurance was unknown in the area so each farmer had to bear his own ex penses for repair material necessary Labour was supplied by neighbours One day several would gather at one farm until repairs were complete then on to the next until most of the lesser damaged buildings had been made fit to store hay which was now in full swing The upper part of Joe Greenes bam was a complete wreck ALmost every upright timer had been laid flat The bam floor and stabling underneath were intact so only the upper structure had to be removed Several neighbors who had some tall timbers in their bush lots got them cut down and haul ed to the sawmill to be squared off then drew them to Greenes yard where Joe had engaged Jack Dillon a bam framer from down country to put together the new frame He had been looking over the wreckage for any timbers not broken or cracked that could be used and the next few weeks he and his crew were measuring sawing boring holes and shaping wooden pins fitting some sections on the ground so that they had only to be hauled up into place Every piece was marked what fitted into what and where this brace went and where that brace went so there would be less con fusion on the day the neighbours the bam raisin At last the framer announced he was ready so Joe Greene telephoned his near neighbors to arrange a day that would be most convenient for moat people A day set and word went round the countryside and on that- day every farmer and his hired man for miles around gathered at Joes yard with such tools as would be necessary The farm women came loaded with provi sions homemade bread and farm tea biscuits cold roasts of beef and ham and kettles of stew and of course pies of all kinds A sugar kettle was set up on its tripod and all the stews dumped in together and heated up toward noon hour Jack Diilon the bam framer in charge of operations assembled the men and explained the pro ceedings appointed his own crewmen as captains experts in this work detaifd so many men to work with each and a certain sec tion of the bam to work Before they began work he issued this warning Take your time and do things right and whenyou get up in air no snowing off My reputation is accident free and I want it to stay that way When he blew his whistle for the noon lunch break there was a creditable showing of framework around the outside The women bad made piles of sandwiches and heated up the stews and the men showed their appreciation by cleaning up almost everything pies and all A short rest and they went back to their task By five oclock the last timbers were bolted together Dillon thanked the men for their cooperation and the smoothness with wtych the work had gone for ward He and his crew could now get on with putting on the roof and boarding up the sides The men started to leave for their homes and the chores awaiting there all with that inner feeling of neighbor helping neighbor and a little feeling of reward they will get in the tradi tional Bam Dance Next week Part The Bam Dance Ontario Government looking to honor senior citizens TORONTO The Honourable
