careful when they use the area for recreation Snowmobilers are being asked to stop crossing what appear to be open fields at the Orangeville Reservoir since they are damag ing newly planted trees that are buried by the snow Credit Valley Conservation Authority field operations superintendent Jim Hastings said the trees are less than 18 inches tall and cannot be seen easily by snowmobile operators During the last three years with the assistance of the Boy Scouts we have planted over 55000 trees on the open fields of JAKE IS the reservoir are killing trees by crushing them or by com pacting the snow near the tree which reduces the insulation qualities of the snow exposing the trees to frost damage The perimeter of the property is fenced and posted with yellow circle signs which comply with the Trespass to Property Act to notify visitors these lands are controlled and activities are con ditional to the permission of the Authority said Hastings Individuals fishing on the reservoir are being asked to clean up after themselves since a significant garbage problem is developing Hastings said garbage left behind freezes into the ice and then finds its way into the water during the ice melt in the spring He emphasized the waste is a direct threat to the fishery as well as other wildlife Unfortunately some people are leaving behind bait boxes and food packages on the ice some have even left homemade fishing huts out on the water He said garbage receptacles are provided at the two access gates for the disposal of refuse and asked that people respect the environment during the winter months as well It is a very difficult form of pollution easily avoidable with the cooperation of anglers visiting the site said Hastings MELTING PRICES Closing the door Acton Sabres goalie Greg
