Acton meets Fergus in first playoff round By ROBERT RISK Herald Editor Acton Sabres defeated Fergus Friday on the road in what wound up as a warm up game for the playoffs Due to Schomberg securing se cond place on the weekend Sabres were scheduled to begin the first round of postseason play yesterday Tuesday at Fergus which finished in sixth place This year the two top junior teams and got a first round bye Acton finished third earning the right to play the basement dwell Fergus team Sabre coach Ken Steen explained why the team played the first game on the road instead of at Acton results unavailable at press time We have a tight schedule and we couldnt get ice time at Acton soon enough Well be playing at home on Wednesday tonight at Jamie 7 30 and Friday at m The fourth game will be at Fergus on Sunday at pm Steen said the team started out a bit slow against Fergus after scoring their first two goals in the opening period The guys kind of figured it would be no problem to win After Fergus scored to make it in the second we picked things up Assistant captain Jamie ran scored the first goal just 27 seconds into the game Paul Larsen followed that goal up with a shorthanded effort at 4 38 to make the score Curran scored the second thanded goal of the evening for Sabres at 37 of the middle frame earning his second goal of the evening After Fergus scored at 43 Acton tightened up to end the period 31 Jeff Sbevalier who has been filling opponents nets with pucks since be joined Sabres scored the first of his two markers seconds into the third period to get the team moving Steen said one of the reasons for the lethargic start was the absence of a few players who play a large rote in Sabres game plan Adam Hilts is hurting along with Mark Brommersma John Van Dam was serving a suspen sion for fighting In the Orangevilie game Van Dam will be back for Wednesday while should be ready Friday Steen would not specify the in juries Hilts and Brommersma have suffered and was unsure when Hilts would be able to return to the lineup The coach said one new face is likely to be seen on the bench in the near future but said he wouldnt release details until the Fergus Ellis Matt Hotham and Trevor Cash combined on a rush at the 12 mark The second period ended The third period saw Ryan Bobor score assisted by Dan Smith shot from the top of the circle and it appeared to hit the and go into the net Orangevilie came back at the 11 36 mark to tie the game had made the save but fell back in the net with the puck and Orangevilie was awarded a goal Georgetown came back at 12 with Jay Hayes taking a good clean shot on net with Hotham looking for the rebound Georgetown continued to press but the period came to a close with the score tied 1 In overtime Pearce made two big saves in the opening minute to keep the score at 1 1 Orangevilie scored with remaining to take the lead 2 1 Georgetown clawed and scratch to tie the game 40 seconds later when Brent McClung hit the net with a high backhand shot after Dan Smith and Scott Ellis dug the puck out from the corner The game ended 2 2 The fifth game of the series was played in Orangevilie on Feb 3 but results were Alcott Brothers may have dif ferences but the tandem of Scott and Charlie were on the same wavelength last weekend netting a total of eight points in two games Out of eight goals scored by Raiders 65 over Streetsville at on Friday and a 52 loss at home against Burlington on Saturday the brothers combined on three goals with Scott being fed by Charlie each time Charlie also scored one goal and assisted on another Raider coach Gary McFadyen said there wasnt anything inten in how the wound up after the weekend was completed Charlie is a defenceman so he t regularly play on a line with his brother I definitely not complaining about the result said he wasn t hap py with the loss to Burlington Saturday but pointed out the game was kept fairly close since Cougars scored their fifth goal in to an empty net Both Sirota and Jason Nicholson played well stopping 32 shots in each of their starts We just werent putting the puck past them We Burlington 37 but they still beat us Even though Raiders defeated Streetsville Friday said he wasnt satisfied with the close outcome of the game almost tied it up after get ting two goals late in the third period We aged to tighten things up in time but it t have come to that Again we had pie ty of chances to be up but we kept missing the opportunities The coach praise for the players who managed to bury the puck in the twine such as Corey Ames who scored one goal and assisted on two others Friday The hard working Ames got in from the start against Streetsville notching a powerplay goal at 10 of the first period on an assist from Marty Savoy to bring the team to within one goal The Humber brothers con nected before the end of the frame to tie it 2 at Scott got the honors assisted by Charlie Humber and Dan Raiders took the lead at 1 of the second when John Williamson took a feed from Savoy and Ames increased the gap at 6 23 with help from Charlie and Bill McDonald but got one back before the end of the period Charlie combined with Williamson and Ames for Raiders fifth goal followed by Charlie Officer who got the win ner assisted by Lewis at 13 36 of the final period In Saturdays contest the boys connected for two goals but it wasnt enough as Burlington took two points home with them Raiders played Streetsville Tuesday but results were unavailable at press time Georgetowns final two games of the regular season are at
