better be prepared for a fight That s the message between SO and 75 people from Acton and the rural area gave the three Acton councillors to relay to all coun during a meeting last Thursday at he Acton arena The meeting was called in response to a recent Town Budget Committee recommendation that the million arena proposal be taken out of the capital budget forecast and put in the 1993 forecast However the three Acton and those attending the meeting agreed that s unaccep table To put the arena in the 1993 forecast means putting it in lim bo something the people don t want stressed Acton Councillor Norm Elliott The tion will go before Town council in March for final consideration The Budget Committee is com prised of the Town councillors Elliott said while a few audience members wanted con struct ion on the arena to begin this year most agreed the most sensible alternative is for it to be included in the capital forecast If approved by council Town Director of Recreation and Parks Tom Shepard would be able to this year for funding and if granted the money would be available in 1992 Construction could then begin in instead of 1994 as would hap pen if budget committee s was approved ex plained Coun Elliott Budget Committee in making its recommendation expressed concern that if the arena is ap proved this year financing of the Town s portion of the S3 million to million project would mean an increase to residents 1993 tax levy of per cent over what it would otherwise be Committee decided residents should not face such an increase To change committee s stance those attending the meeting devised a threepronged attack said Acton councillor Gerald A committee was formed which will soon make a tion to Town council start a peti tion and begin lobbying Georgetown councillors by telephone said Renme Acton residents are hopeful they can persuade councillors to come around to their way of thinking said Coun Elliott Their alternative if approved in 1992 could be rejected by next year s council even if it had received provincial funding for that year said the councillor Starting the process now means Town council could spend the next 10 months trying to find alternative ways to meet its fun ding obligations aside from tax increases explained Elliott Residents believe a new arena cannot be put on the shelf any longer because it s only a matter of time
