Sabres lead Cougars 20 in playoff series By ROBERT RISK Herald Sports Editor Acton Jr C Sabres ducked Schomberg Cougars with a pair of wins to start their bestof seven semi final series on Thurs day and Friday Sabres dominated the Cougars who had the lowest goals against average in the league 7 1 on the road Thursday and returned home Friday for a overtime win Coach Ken Steen said he is pro ud of his player s ac compllabments so far but Is cer tain the series is far from over He pointed out how dose the two MidOntario league teams were matched up in regular season play We were tied with them in wins 2 2 and Bcored just one more goals than they dd The guys cant let up the pressure now Both teams know the third game is a big one since it s very tough to come back if you re down Steen said the players will be taking the same approach for their game in Schomberg Thurs day and maintain control of the flow of the play The boys really did that well in the ovetime period on Friday We got the puck and pretty much kept it in their end until we scored Steen also credited a team fort with the big 1 opener in Schomberg Thursday especially since Sabres were missing a few players We were shorthanded three or four guys due to midterm ex Greg Powell The guys really came through and put out a great ef fort I dont want to make ex cuses but I thought Schomberg was a little felt not having played for days Steen said he got the goal pro duction he needed In that first game with Phil Fraser and Jamie Curran each scoring twice and Adam Hilts Jeff Shevalier and Jim English getting singles At home Friday Sabres took a 30 lead in the first period after Paul Jeff Shevalier and Craig Kerfoot had each found the net got Sabres on the board first at 1 after being set up by Jason Lucas and Jim English Schomberg tied It up at the four minute mark before Shevalier found the net in the opening period After the visitors came back with two to knot the score 33 Craig Kerfoot came through in overtime with the help of Jamie Curran to get the win Steen had nothing but praise for goalteoder Greg Powell who was stationed between the pipes for both games and Is likely to play Thursday though the coach would not confirm that at press time Ken Greg has played great stand- up for us in the playoffs Hen handled the puck very well and hasnt been giving up much Sabres will play game four at an end for Georgetown Raiders Jr B hockey team on Saturday having been eliminated from the playoffs in three straight games by Brampton Capitals Georgetown had dropped the first two matches in Brampton losing 73 on Tuesday and on Thursday Saturday at Alcott Raiders were looking to play game four at home the next night but lost Raider coach Gary McFadyen said the loss was a disappointing one for the team and Its ex ecutive which bad aimed to win at least the first round of post We made that our goal but it didn t go our way I like to be back next year to Improve on the nucleus of the team we already We improved on last year getting 12 wins this time I d like to have the chance to bring it up to wins hockey or bet ter McFadyen said one of the keys for improving next year is getting one or two more quality scorers that will force teams to adjust to them not the other way around We had things going well in Saturday s game when Jeff Shevalier an Acton Jr C call up had scored and was controlling the tempo until Brampton got involved in a fight said he was sure Capitals Instigated the fight to get Raiders sparkplug ejected Once that was done the visitors came back from a l deficit to trail by just one starting the third period Brampton scored five times in the final frame for the win Brampton is a tough team once they get rolling With Jeff Shevalier gone it was tougher They definitely outplayed us in the third The coach said quite a few other players will be given a serious look at next year s since many of them were first year B skaters Several showed a lot of promise and would be likely to improve with more experience pointed out McFadyen
